Course Information

Course Outcomes

  • Demonstrate listening comprehension skills by accurately writing in the target language what is heard, by answering questions related to the information given in a monologue, a dialogue or an interview provided by native speakers of different Spanish-speaking countries.
  • Demonstrate speaking ability by expressing increasingly more complicated sentences, and utilizing accurate vocabulary and grammatical constructions in a prompted dialogue, an interview, or in open-ended questions. Produce original dialogues during pair/group activities and role-playing. Ask questions with proper intonation and provide general information in the present and preterit tenses.
  • Demonstrate reading comprehension skills by answering questions orally or in writing after reading a passage in the target language; deduce meaning about what was read by making educated guesses using cognates and context to assist in the comprehension process.
  • Demonstrate writing ability by creating structurally correct affirmative, interrogative, and negative sentences using the present and preterit tenses for role-play situations or for descriptive paragraphs, with minimum spelling errors.
  • Assimilate additional cultural information through the introduction of theme-specific vocabulary, the description and recognition of photographs, among other visual elements, centered on the world of the target language.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of parts of speech by correctly identifying tenses, distinguishing between regular and irregular verbs in the present and past tenses, and recognizing different pronouns categories; show noun-verb and noun-adjective agreement; recognize and accurately use nouns, adjectives, pronouns, adverbs, conjunctions, and prepositions.

How Outcomes will be met

This course covers chapters 6-10 in the textbook.  This course provides intermediate level instruction in the basic structures and vocabulary of Spanish to develop your functional proficiency in understanding, reading, speaking, and writing Spanish.  Your knowledge of the geography and cultures of the Hispanic world is enhanced, including familiarity with related art, music, literature, traditions, and customs.  You should be prepared to speak in SPANISH during the course.  This course requires you to use the Textbook website, the “Aventuras Supersite” http://aventuras.vhlcentral.com from home.  If you do not have access to the Internet at home, the Language Learning Lab in A244 is available for your use.

Grading

Tests 50% (5 Chapter Tests) Lowest chapter test grade will be dropped.

Online Practice Exams (Prueba Bs)  20% (5 total, 1 for Each Chapter)

Online Homework Assignments (Web-Sam & Lab Manual Activities) 20 %

*According to the Arts & Humanities Division Procedures and Policies, when students miss more than 20% of a course (which is only 4 class sessions for us), an F may be assigned.

Exams must be taken on the scheduled date.  No make-ups are allowed, except for emergencies (i.e. death in the family, serious illness), and only after 1 test has been dropped.  Exams will be taken in the Language Learning Lab on the computers, or if our class is too large, then in class on a hard-copy.  .

No late homework will be accepted for full credit.  You must be prepared with completed assignments online at the beginning of class (*Even though the online website says that they are not due until 8:59 on the date due).   This time reference to 8:59 is something that I cannot change online, and assignments are due at the beginning of class.  Assignments that are completed within 1 week of due date online, will receive ½ credit.  After 1 week, no credit will be given.  Homework is completed online through the Web-Sam and Lab-Manual sections of the Supersite.

Books and Materials Required

Required Material:  Donley, Benavides, Blanco, Aventuras, 3rd ed., Vista Higher Learning, Boston, MA, USA 2009.  The Supersite:  http://aventuras.vhlcentral.com

Classroom Learning Atmosphere

Instructor’s Expectation

Daily Homework:  Daily homework is completed online in the Web-Sam & Lab-Manual sections of the Aventuras Supersite.  For each section we cover in class, there is a coordinating set of assignments online that must be completed before the next class session.  Homework is graded Credit/No Credit.  If true attempts are shown, then full credit will be received.  Keep notes of any questions that you have on daily homework, the first 5-10 minutes of class will be dedicated to reviewing the previous night’s Web-Sam or Lab Manual assignments.

Tests:  Each chapter test will include a listening activity, and then multiple writing activities.  Study guides will be available on the MyBC Class site to help you study before the tests, and the Practice Exam Assignments that are required online are similar to the exams and will help you prepare.  Your lowest test score will be dropped to accommodate any missed tests due to an emergency, sickness or other reasons.  No test make-ups will be allowed.  All tests must be taken on their scheduled dates.  Test will be taken in the Language Learning Lab on the computers, through the Supersite.

Participation:  Come to class on time, ready to work and anxious to learn.  Participate actively in all class discussions, ask questions, and work productively in groups.  Spanish should be spoken at all times once you enter the classroom.  If you finish a group activity early, chat in Spanish.  If you come early to class, chat in Spanish.  You will receive up to 5 participation points for each chapter—I will be watching, listening and chatting, too!  Come prepared with all materials!

Aventuras Supersite Activities:  For each chapter you will be required to complete activities on the Aventuras supersite under the “Web-Sam” section.  There are generally between 30-40 activities assigned to help with practicing vocabulary and grammar.  Assignments will be graded with credit/no-credit only.  Please use the activities to PRACTICE!  There is one practice exam (prueba B) at the end of each chapter, which will help you prepare for the exam.  You will have only one attempt, and you may use your book.  Think of it as a study guide, as it is very similar in format  to the actual in-class exams.

How do I know my grade?  I will use an online grading system at www.engrade.com.  I will update grades at the end of each chapter test.  You will be able to access your current grade at any time from home.  Instructions to access grades will be posted on the MyBC site, after the chapter 6 test.  It is your responsibility to access grades and come to me with any questions or concerns.
