this quarter)
1. An Integrated Course in Elementary Japanese, Genki vol. I, Japan Times 2011
2. Genki
Workbook Vol. I,
Japan Times 2011
GENKI
Workbook:
It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to regularly review
the class content by doing the exercises in the Genki Workbook. Please make it a habit to do the workbook everyday for
the materials we covered in class. Some homework will be also assigned from the
workbook for you to submit.
Attendance:
Students
are expected to attend every class meeting on time. Rolls are called at the
beginning of the class. This class meets only twice a week. Missing one day of class will easily put you behind. When you come late or leave early, it will penalize your
Attendance/Participation points. Be in class on time = 1 point; Tardy = 0.5 point; Leave early = 0.5 point regardless of the reason, unless the
student suddenly feels seriously ill.
When
you are absent, it is YOUR RESPONSITIBLITY to find out what you missed from
your classmates or at MyBC Class Sites.
In case of SNOW:
If
the college closes due to snow, the instructor communicates with students
through MyBC Class Site and BC email account. Be sure
to keep checking the class site and your BC email account until we return to
class. If you have BC email account, you are automatically subscribed to the
emergency alert system (RAVE). However, it is highly recommended that you also
add your CELL PHONE NUMBER to the system at https://www.getrave.com
so you will immediately be updated when BC closes due to inclement weather. You
may also call the pre-recorded message on the school emergency phone line at
(425) 401-6680.
Oral Tests:
We
will have one or two oral tests to assess your speaking ability. The dates and contents of each oral test will
be announced later.
Test:
Lesson Tests are
given at the end of Lesson 5, 6, and 7. The content of Lesson 8 will be
included in the Final Exam. Please use PENCIL on your test. Do not have your cell phone or other
electric devices out during the test. On test days, we spend the first hour
for the test and another hour for regular class. If you leave after test, you
will lose half the point for the day’s attendance. ABSOLUTELY
NO MAKE UP for Lesson Tests, unless emergencies happen such as death in the
family or serious illness, or you make an arrangement with the instructor in
advance. You will lose 10% in
make-up tests without a written document of absence (e.g., Doctor’s note) except
for special cases, so I encourage you to take all the tests on time.
Quiz:
We will have Kanji Quiz at the end of each lesson,
and Grammar Quiz as indicated in the
course schedule. Kanji Quiz will be only on meaning and reading of Kanji
words on the handout, “List of Kanji words” posted at our class site. Learning to write Kanji is strongly recommended especially if you
plan to transfer to a 4-year college and continue Japanese.
NO MAKE-UP will be allowed unless there was an
emergency such as a death in the family or serious illness, AND you contacted
the instructor within 5 hours from your absence. You will lose 10% in make-up quizzes without a written document of
absence (e.g., Doctor’s note) except for special cases, so I encourage you to
take all the quizzes on time.
Final
Exam:
Final
Exam is scheduled on Monday, March 18 from 5:30 to 7:40 PM in our classroom. Final Exam is comprehensive,
covering everything from Lesson 5 to Lesson 8.
