Journal Entry #2

Instructions:  Please answer the following questions completely, on a separate piece of paper, and use the Rothwell text (and terminology) to inform your answers. I prefer your answers to be word processed for ease of reading! ;) One to two pages, double-spaced, 12 point type, with one inch margins should be sufficient for answering the questions below.

Chapter 3

1. This chapter discusses the phases of group development, which you and your group(s) will experience this quarter.  Let’s focus on the phase of “Norming”.  When you consider Shannon Faulkner’s effort to become the first female cadet at the Citadel, and other women, or racial/ethnic minorities who seek to become “members” of former white male organizations or institutions, what strategies could/should the newcomer and the group use to make the process more successful? What processes must occur for those who have been considered “outsiders” to be accepted?

Chapter 4

2.  This chapter discusses the Robber’s Cave Experiment and Gibb’s model for supportive (cooperative) versus defensive (competitive) group communication.

Discuss the element of “Control” versus “Problem Orientation” in Gibb’s model and how it can affect small groups and their goals. Please use specific examples from your own experience, the Robber’s Cave Experiment and other Rothwell case studies to explicate your response.
