Hybrid Course Requirements

This section of ENGL 092 is a hybrid course, which combines online learning with class attendance sessions.  As such, it is important, and ultimately your responsibility, to follow all directions for using the Blackboard Vista online learning system successfully.

ü  Know your system requirements and your software capabilities.

ü  Follow the directions for conducting browser and software checks and making adjustments on your system.

ü  Log on to the system regularly to view the calendar, check your email, and review graded assignments.

ü  Make contingency plans for computer access in the event that your primary computer and/or Internet service is unavailable.

ü  Plan to print documents for in-class work. See the N Building Open Computing Lab for printing availability.

ü  Ask for help in a timely manner, so that you will be able to successfully participate in both the online and the classroom portions of the class.

English 092 Course Description

English 092 emphasizes advanced editing and critical thinking skills. Students learn to meet composition objectives by writing, revising, and editing essays and by analyzing their work from other classes.

English 092 Course Outcomes

While English 092 courses at Bellevue College vary widely in their choice of readings, media, and writing assignments, all courses adhere to the following outcomes:

After completing this course, students should be able to

Use all stages of the writing process effectively.

Identify the needs of their audience.

   Produce a substantive topic.

Create a unified, coherent, and well-developed piece of writing which consistently follows appropriate conventions of Standard English.

Use a variety of purposes for essay construction, such as analysis, exposition, and/or persuasion.

Demonstrate ability to recognize some strengths and weaknesses in their own writing, based on specified criteria.

Assignment Policy

Because each assignment builds on the skills developed in the previous assignment, it is important to complete work on time.

·         Late assignments—for any reason—are due no later than 48 hours from the posted due date and time.

·         Online assignments must be submitted with time to allow for any technical problems that may arise. The Blackboard system automatically checks assignments in as either on time or indicates when they are late for up to the 48-hour limit. After the 48-hour limit, the system no longer accepts assignments.

·         Note that although assignments submitted after the due date/time are marked “Late” by the Blackboard system, there is no penalty for the lateness.

·         Assignments must be submitted as assigned, in the correct format (.doc or .docx), through the Blackboard Vista system. DO NOT use the campus mail system or Bellevue College email to submit assignments.

·         For the three essays, there are no revisions allowed after the final draft is submitted. Consequently, it is important to take care in the drafting and editing stages to ensure that you earn the highest grade possible: check the printed directions sheet and scoring rubric to be sure you understand the assignment, complete all related readings, participate in peer reviews in class, ask your instructor for help both during class time and in individual conferences, and visit the Writing Lab for additional help with editing.

Attendance Policy

This course includes on-campus attendance, so it is important that you make every effort to attend each class session in its entirety. From years of experience, I can assure you there is a very high correlation between attendance and success in class: Missing even one or two classes may seriously jeopardize your ability to earn a passing grade for the course.

In college, there are no excused absences; however, I am also aware that illness and emergencies do arise. As such, the attendance policy is as follows:

·         You have two free absences for illness and emergencies, including absences created by circumstances outside of your immediate control.

·         Attendance is taken promptly at the beginning of class. If you arrive late, you will need to check in at the end of class to have your attendance record changed.

·         Under no circumstances should you come to class if you are ill even if you have used up your free attendance points. Instead, contact me by Blackboard email to make other arrangements.

1-2 Absences

Free

3 or More Absences

A 10-point deduction will be taken from the overall class grade for each absence.

Partial Absences

Late arrivals/early departures count as .5 absences. (5-point deduction)

Winter Weather Conditions

In case of severe winter weather conditions, check with the Bellevue College website, Schoolreport.org, or other local media regarding campus closures. You should also check Blackboard Vista for this class, even if campus is not closed, to see if I have cancelled class in the event that I am unable to get to campus. The most important point is to use good judgment and be safe: do not attempt to come to campus if the conditions are hazardous for you, even if campus is not closed.

Classroom Decorum

In general, because we share a small space in class, and we need to focus on the day’s learning activities, observe the following considerations for your peers and instructor:

ü  Respect the rights of others in class to hold views different from your own.

ü  Silence and stow all electronic devices during class except as used for educational purposes.

ü  Avoid side conversations during instruction and discussion.

ü  Avoid eating. Beverages are fine.

Ownership

The work that you turn in under your name is expected to be your original work, written for this course and to the specifications of the assignment. Although you are encouraged to seek feedback on your writing from others and from the Writing Center, the writing must be demonstrably and essentially your own. Save drafts, outlines, and other preliminary steps toward your finished work, just in case a question of ownership arises.

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is the use of someone else’s words, ideas, or information as if they are your own or allowing someone else to use your words, ideas, or information as their own. It is important that you learn the correct techniques for documenting sources of information to be incorporated in your writing for any subject area in college, as well as in your professional and personal works. According to Bellevue Community College policy, for plagiarism or cheating, you may be given an “F” grade for an individual assignment or the entire course. In addition, the incident will be reported to the Dean of Student Services.

Disability Resource Center

Students with disabilities who have accommodation needs are required to meet with the Director of the Disability Resource Center (Room B -132) to establish their eligibility for accommodation.  Telephone: (425) 564-2498 or TTY (425) 564-4110. In addition, students are encouraged to review their accommodation requirements with each instructor during the first week of the quarter
