Course Outcomes
After completing this course, students will be able to:
Think and read critically: carefully
read, analyze, interpret and evaluate claims, beliefs, texts and/or issues.
Compose and revise in context: shape
written responses for different audiences and purposes.
·
employ
style, tone, and mechanical conventions appropriate to the demands of a
particular audience or purpose.
Reflect and evaluate: recognize
and incorporate newly acquired skills.
Coursework
There
are six modules for this course. Each
module is devoted to a topic of reading and a technical chapter on
writing. There will be an essay and a
quiz due for each module. Thus, you will
write six essays and take six quizzes. Also,
there will be daily writing assignments.
These writings will comprise almost half of your grade, so if you’re not
really into reading and writing a lot, or not open to it, I suspect you will
find our coursework stressful and unpleasant.

6
QUIZZES 5 points each possible

Course Policies
Attendance
If
you miss more than THREE classes your grade is subject to drop one full
letter.
If
you miss more than SIX CLASSES you are subject to fail.
Late Assignments
Late work is
not accepted.
Electronic Devices
All
cell phones, laptops, tablets, ipads, etc. must be
turned off during class. We do this
because we respect each other’s time and attention.
Classroom Conduct
We
are all in this together. As a class we
will learn from and teach each other.
Let us strive to always act and speak respectfully. How we conduct ourselves in class is
significantly related to what we accomplish in class. It difficult enough to talk honestly and
clearly about ideas in a large room of strangers, so PLEASE do not make it more
difficult by having personal conversations or making side remarks while others
are talking.
