Students can also visit the ASC Workshops page for Zoom links to join our free online workshops. In fall, the Reading Lab is offering two workshops through BC Multicultural Services (MCS), and these two workshops require registration. For all other workshops, no registration is required.

Tips for Reading Your Textbook 

Have you ever had trouble getting through your textbook? Come and practice strategies that will help you connect, understand, and remember the information you read. In addition, you will learn ways to manage the time you spend on your reading. The tips you learn in this workshop come from both reading experts and fellow students who have shared their secrets. Bring your textbook if you can.  

How to Find the Main Idea in Readings 

Instructors often ask you to find the main idea, but what is the best way to find it? How can you know if you found it? Why is it so important? How can it help you become a better reader? Come to this workshop to find the answers to these questions and practice some strategies with other students. Hope to see you there! 

Vocabulary in Context 

Do you have to stop reading and use a dictionary every time you come across a word you don’t know? Come to this workshop to learn and practice strategies that can help you understand vocabulary as you read.  

How to Read a Scholarly Article 

Do you know what a peer reviewed scholarly article is?  Have you wondered, ‘What is the best way to read and remember the information presented in an article’?  Come to this workshop and learn strategies that will help you deepen your understanding of the text.  During this workshop, you will also have the chance to apply what you learned, so buckle up and get ready for some fun activities and tips.  Hope to see you there!  

Reading Faster 

Do you feel overwhelmed by the amount of reading your college teachers give you? Reading too slowly can affect how well you understand the reading. This workshop will teach you skills to measure your reading speed as well as tips on how to increase your speed.  

Understanding American Idioms 

Do you keep reading and hearing American phrases that make no sense? Do they “drive you up a wall”, and are they the “bane of your existence”? Come to this workshop to learn, practice, and maybe even have some fun. 

Summarizing Your Reading 

Do you find yourself copying the whole text when you are supposed to be summarizing? Do you ever wonder “How can I say this by using my own words”? Learn how to effectively summarize your reading, and how it can help you understand your reading assignments. Come to this workshop and you will learn and practice effective summarizing strategies and skills.
