Bellevue received stellar pitching in the first two games as Tyson Schmitt allowed only four hits and one earned run in seven innings of work in a 5-0 loss to the San Francisco Giants minor league club in their opener on Thursday March 13. The Giants assembled a mix of older and younger professional players to battle the Bulldogs in a close game that was 2-0 until the seventh inning.

On Friday March 14, Bellevue played three games in one day; non-stop and at three different sites, making it a daunting task both physically and mentally. In the opening game, Bellevue’s Nick Kiel surprised many of the spring training fans in attendance at the Brewers spring training facility by dominating the professional club through six innings. Kiel did not allow a run and surrendered only three hits and struck out six until the final inning as the pro club overtook the Bulldogs’ early 1-0 lead by scoring four runs to win 4-1. In game two, played at Glendale Community College, Bellevue transitioned from playing professional teams back to two-year college clubs with a splash as they put up two quick runs off one of the top junior college pitchers in Arizona in the first inning. Nate Anderson led off the game with a single and was driven in by Alex Galgano’s triple. Bellevue had a 4-3 lead midway through the game before walks and wild pitches gave Glendale the big inning; a four-run fourth to seal the win. Aaron Stroosma hit his third home run of the year; a 390′ line drive to left field for Bellevue. In the nightcap at Chandler Gilbert CC, Bellevue gave up six runs early and chipped away but fell short 10-6. Brady Kerr, Alex Check, and Joakim Soderqvist all had two hits while John Bodenhamer and Jordan Silva each had 2 RBI’s.

On the third day of the trip, for games five and six played at Paradise Valley CC, it was evident the Buldogs were tired as they lost a doubleheader by scores of 13-3 and 8-2. Bellevue managed to scrap together only seven hits on the day. Nick Pribble was the lone multiple hit player for Bellevue going 2-for-3 in the first game. Bellevue’s six game losing skid in Arizona now puts them at 4-9 on the year as they close out pre-season play in Tacoma with doubleheaders on Saturday at Mt. Tahoma HS and Sunday at Tacoma CC.

Bellevue College Baseball had a rough week going 0-6 against a mix of competition including two professional teams and three Arizona junior colleges in a span of three days.
