Bellevue College men’s basketball did not disappoint in the hype of the NWAC’s top-two ranked team according to the latest Coaches’ Poll, as number one Skagit fell to the second ranked Bulldogs 75-62 at Courter Family Athletic Pavilion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a near even first half, Bellevue initially fell down out of the gate 4-0 but then went on a 12-0 run led by Josiah Johnson and Will Woodward, putting the ‘dogs up 12-4. Skagit Valley would fight back and pulled to 14-13 on a Treyshawn Weatherspoon layup with 10:20 to go in the half. From there on the teams remained in a see saw battle leading up to a narrow 35-33 Bellevue halftime lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Skagit Valley came out on the hotter end to start off the second half as Jerry Petty Jr. penetrated through traffic to put the Cardinals up 44-42 at the 16:18 mark before Johnson answered for BC with a layup on the other end. Max Mayo and Sawyer Cottrell nailed back to back three pointers to give the Bulldogs momentum as they pulled ahead by six at 52-46 with 12:21 left in the game. Skagit made attempts to do damage control quickly with three pointers but missed three in a row in addition to two free throws giving BC a double digit lead at 56-46. Skagit had chances late but missed seven free throws down the stretch preventing any sort of comeback. On Bellevue’s side, Cottrell and Woodward made both ends of their free throws late in the game to give BC cushion down the stretch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Woodward led Bellevue with 19 points and 14 rebounds while Johnson added 14. Mayo had 11 points and six rebounds. Skagit Valley’s seven for 18 (39%) from the line proved to be costly for the Cards, who had an eight game win streak snapped, falling to 5-1 in region play and 19-2 overall. Bellevue continued to add to their 19-game win streak and are 6-0 in region play and 19-2 overall as well. The Bulldogs travel to Whatcom this Wed.
