Bellevue College women’s basketball fell behind big early on and could not recover in a 58-43 loss at home against Skagit Valley. The Bulldogs, down 20-9 after the first quarter, played evenly with the Cardinals the rest of the way, but the dismal one for 11 shooting (9%) in the first quarter made any comeback difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Cardinals not only took advantage of cold Bellevue shooting in the first quarter, but dominated underneath with a 16-7 rebounding edge. Bellevue fell behind 12-2 but managed to scrap back 14-7 on a Shannel Kovalsky free throw with 3:12 to go in the quarter. Two turnovers by the ‘dogs with a minute remaining allowed Skagit Valley to build the lead back up to over single digits at the buzzer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the third, Kovalsky gave Bellevue hope with a layup with 4:07 on the clock to pull BC within six at 34-28, but the Cardinals answered with two buckets to extend the lead to 10 again. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bellevue again made it interesting in the fourth, pulling to 46-41 on a D’Ana Esquivel layup at 5:43, but the Cardinals went on a 12-0 run, as the ‘dogs went on a five minute scoring drought to close out the game. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Bulldogs had one of their worst offensive performances of the season, shooting 23% from the field with zero three pointers and cashing in on 62% from the line. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kovalsky had 13 points and was strong underneath with a team high nine rebounds and three blocked shots for Bellevue. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
