Definition of Plain Language:&nbsp;<em><span class=\"definitionb\">&#8220;A communication is in plain language if its wording, structure, and design are so clear that the intended readers can readily find what they need, understand it, and use it.&#8221; <\/span><\/em><span class=\"definitionb\">Visit the <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.plainlanguage.gov\/guidelines\/\" target=\"_blank\">Plain Language Guidelines<\/a> or download the <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/68\/2016\/01\/Plain-Language-Checklist.docx\" target=\"_blank\">Plain Language checklist<\/a>. (Pro tip: if you start on the <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.plainlanguage.gov\/guidelines\/audience\/\" target=\"_blank\">Write for your Audience page<\/a> and keep clicking &#8220;next&#8221; at the bottom of each page, you can learn the entire module!)<\/span> The U.K. has some <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.plainenglish.co.uk\/free-guides.html\" target=\"_blank\">free guides to Plain Language<\/a> if you&#8217;d like to delve deeper. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Universal Design<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Make your class accessible to all kinds of learners by incorporating the principles of Universal Design. Consider attending a workshop through Bellevue College&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/facultycommons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Faculty Commons<\/a>, Colorado State has assembled some materials for <a href=\"http:\/\/accessproject.colostate.edu\/udl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Universal Design in Learning<\/a> that you may find helpful&nbsp;and the University of Washington&#8217;s DO-It program takes it a step further with information on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washington.edu\/doit\/equal-access-universal-design-instruction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Universal Design of&nbsp;Instruction.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Use Canvas!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Organizing your class materials in Canvas supports student organization. There are many on-campus resources to support you in getting your materials on Canvas &#8211; ask your colleagues\u00a0for support if you&#8217;re having difficulty finding resources. Interactive eLearning has some terrific <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/elearningfaculty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Faculty Resources<\/a> for you!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Real-Time Captioning&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/support.office.com\/en-us\/article\/use-live-captions-in-a-teams-meeting-4be2d304-f675-4b57-8347-cbd000a21260\" target=\"_blank\">Microsoft Teams<\/a> and will automatically caption in real-time for you if you turn it on. You may wish to instruct first-time users how to turn it on. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/support.zoom.us\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/207279736-Closed-Captioning\" target=\"_blank\">Zoom<\/a> is provides auto-captions as well. You just need to turn it on!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Create Accessible Documents<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Interactive eLearning often has workshops about this, and so does the Faculty Commons. Another excellent resource is from the University of Washington: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washington.edu\/accessibility\/documents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Creating Accessible Documents<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>UC Berkley Faculty Self-Evaluation<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>UC Berkley has quite a few accessibility and compliance self-evaluations, so you can learn a lot if you have the time. The <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/dac.berkeley.edu\/services\/ada-self-evaluation-work-plan\/faculty\" target=\"_blank\">Faculty Self-Evaluation Work Plan<\/a> examines practices around ensuring maximum curriculum accessibility. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Microsoft Higher Education Blog<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Microsoft is all about accessibility! Their <a href=\"https:\/\/educationblog.microsoft.com\/en-us\/category\/higher-education\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Higher Education Blog<\/a> can take you to so many places, so if you&#8217;re interested in exploring, this is a great place to learn about all kinds of accessibility in higher education. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Note Sharing<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Helping students share notes in class supports learning and community!
