{"id":8370,"date":"2026-07-08T13:09:10","date_gmt":"2026-07-08T20:09:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/drc\/?page_id=8370"},"modified":"2026-07-08T13:26:49","modified_gmt":"2026-07-08T20:26:49","slug":"memory-aids-accommodation","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/drc\/memory-aids-accommodation\/","title":{"rendered":"Memory Aids Accommodation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div style=\"height:23px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Overview<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Memory Aids are a tool used to prompt memory of learned course material for students who experience cognitive processing deficits in working memory and recall.&nbsp;<strong>They do not&nbsp;provide&nbsp;direct answers or explicit course material that is being evaluated.<\/strong>&nbsp;This accommodation should not alter the academic requirements of students within the course subject.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is a memory aid?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A testing accommodation that allows a student to use ONE handwritten double sided 5-inch by 8-inch card with cues or reminders on an exam.\u202f<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In some cases,&nbsp;a&nbsp;student&nbsp;may&nbsp;be allowed to type Memory Aids&nbsp;and\/or&nbsp;use an&nbsp;8.5-inch by 11-inch sheet of paper.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Memory Aids&nbsp;must be approved by the course faculty before using it on an exam.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Faculty&nbsp;determine&nbsp;what is or is not&nbsp;appropriate for&nbsp;their exams.\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:35px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Required Memory Aid Approval Process <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Memory Aids&nbsp;will need to be approved by the course instructor prior to it being used on each exam.&nbsp;Students&nbsp;are required&nbsp;to&nbsp;turn&nbsp;in&nbsp;their&nbsp;Memory Aids to their instructor&nbsp;<strong>at least 2 business days<\/strong>&nbsp;prior to the exam date for approval.&nbsp;This gives instructors adequate time to review&nbsp;the content&nbsp;of&nbsp;the&nbsp;Memory&nbsp;Aid&nbsp;and gives&nbsp;students time&nbsp;to make any necessary adjustments&nbsp;and resubmit for approval.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">To use a memory aid on exams,&nbsp;students&nbsp;need to:&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Request&nbsp;accommodations&nbsp;through the&nbsp;DRC&nbsp;each quarter.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meet with faculty at the start of the quarter to discuss the&nbsp;Memory&nbsp;Aid accommodation and what will be allowed.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Turn in Memory Aid to faculty at least 2&nbsp;business days&nbsp;prior to the exam\u202ffor approval. This can be done in-person or over&nbsp;email\/Canvas&nbsp;depending on your instructor\u2019s preference.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Follow faculty instructions on editing&nbsp;Memory Aid&nbsp;and&nbsp;resubmit&nbsp;it for approval before the exam.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Show&nbsp;the&nbsp;proctor&nbsp;your&nbsp;approved Memory Aid when checking in for your&nbsp;exam. They will&nbsp;verify&nbsp;that&nbsp;it&nbsp;is signed&nbsp;by your faculty&nbsp;or&nbsp;that it&nbsp;matches what was approved.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Turn&nbsp;in&nbsp;your&nbsp;Memory Aid to&nbsp;the&nbsp;proctor at the end of your exam.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Understand that failure&nbsp;to get your Memory Aid approved will mean you cannot use it on your exam.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">To approve a student\u2019s Memory Aid, faculty need to:&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Give students guidance on what will&nbsp;and&nbsp;won\u2019t&nbsp;be&nbsp;allowed&nbsp;on Memory Aids.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sign the card&nbsp;physically or&nbsp;send to&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:drc@bellevuecollege.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">drc@bellevuecollege.edu<\/a>&nbsp;when it is approved.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contact the DRC with any questions or concerns&nbsp;regarding&nbsp;this&nbsp;accommodation.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Disability Resource Center will help&nbsp;facilitate&nbsp;conversations about the Memory Aid accommodation between faculty and students when necessary. Please contact us if you need to set up a meeting for this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:43px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Memory Aids Look Like<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Proper Memory Aids should not be useful unless the student understands the information it refers to and would most likely only make sense to the student who created it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">At the&nbsp;faculty\u2019s discretion,&nbsp;Memory Aids&nbsp;could&nbsp;include:&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Acronyms&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pictures&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Diagrams&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Short phrases&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Formulas&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Names&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Definitions&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Key Terms&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tables&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sample questions&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Memory Aids should NOT: <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Serve as a substitute for studying&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Directly answer exam questions&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Include&nbsp;class notes or slides&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Include copied pages of&nbsp;textbook&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Include examples of how formulas are used or&nbsp;how&nbsp;problems are solved&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Include study guides or answer sheets from practice exams&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Include&nbsp;access to&nbsp;textbook&nbsp;or homework in the testing environment&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:45px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Faculty Considerations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When approving&nbsp;Memory Aids,&nbsp;instructors&nbsp;should take into consideration the learning outcomes of the course and what the specific exam is evaluating. Memory Aids do not serve&nbsp;to&nbsp;provide&nbsp;direct answers, but to prompt a student&nbsp;to recall the information.&nbsp;For example,&nbsp;instructors&nbsp;may&nbsp;approve&nbsp;formulas&nbsp;on Memory Aids&nbsp;if&nbsp;it does&nbsp;not&nbsp;include a solved problem&nbsp;showing how to use it.&nbsp;For&nbsp;exams&nbsp;evaluating whether a student knows definitions, a Memory Aid should not include a list of terms along with their definitions.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If memorization of specific materials is a requirement to meet the core-learning outcomes, students may have limited ability to use a Memory Aid.
