About this year’s SI 2024
The Interactive eLearning team, in collaboration with faculty & staff from Bellevue College invite you to participate in a day filled with collaboration and learning. You have the opportunity to participate in four sessions with three options for each session. The twelve session options listed below in the schedule are designed to give you a learning experience in course design and development, irrespective of which modality you choose to participate. So, join us for a day of creative course design using technology to address the end goal of increased student engagement.

Topic: Instructional Strategies and Tech Integration
Presenter: Heather Rane (Digital Learning Coordinator) and George Rowe ( Instructional Designer)
Session Details: How to select and integrate technology tools that complement specific instructional strategies to revitalize teaching practices.
Option B: Online
Topic: Building Virtual Walkthroughs in Spatial IO
Presenter: Bruce Walcott (Instructor, BC XR Lab)
Session Details: Spatial IO is a free, online, multi-user platform that students and faculty can use to build informational galleries and walk-through experiences. In this workshop, you will become familiar with this teaching platform, see some examples, and try it out firsthand from your computer at home.

Topic: Empowering Student Success with Badges
Presenter: Morgan Olson (OETA Project Coordinator)
Session Details: Would you like to enhance your students’ learning journey with visual milestones? Come discover how to integrate badges into your courses with Canvas Credentials so your students can easily share their achievements and skills. You’ll walk away knowing how to log in to Credentials via Canvas, set up a course issuer, and how to design, award, and manage badges.

Topic: OER Supercharged: Fueling Student Success with Free, Flexible Content
Presenter: Michelle Schewe (Collection Development and OER Librarian)
Session Details: Explore the world of Open Educational Resource (OER) in this workshop. You’ll learn where to find existing OER material to use in your classes. You’ll also learn how to take materials you have created for your own classes and share them out as OERs.
Option B: Online
Topic: Advanced Strategies for Student Engagement using Cidi Labs
Presenter: George Rowe (Instructional Designer, eLearning)
Session Details: Explore Cidi Labs tools and ideas for increasing student engagement with course content through a series of micro-trainings and demos. First, we will look at custom home page designs, using columns to vary layouts, and adding interactive elements such as quick checks and pop-up content. Then, you will practice creating your own designs in a hands-on workshop.

Topic: AI, XR, and Moving Beyond FOMO
Presenter: Ron Austin (Digital Learning & Multimedia Manager, eLearning)
Session Details: This Design-Lab session introduces a variety of viewpoints about the expanding use of technology such as AI, XR, and VR into the classroom. We will look at exciting XR and AI examples created by Bellevue College faculty, and we will discuss what you see as appropriate use for AI in education. This session will include a hands-on activity and a game that offers food for thought about best AI practices. The idea is to encourage the use of technology with focused intention, rather than just for the fear of missing out (FOMO).

Topic: Panopto Quizzes: Embed Interactivity, Boost Retention
Presenter: Keith Rowley (Instructor, School of Business & Technology) and David Bruckner (Interim Director, Digital Media Services)
Session Details: With more and more students demanding online instruction, video can be an effective instructional content delivery system. But video by itself is not interactive. Panopto offers in-line quizzes, which draw attention to important information and encourage students to retrieve information from the video.

Topic: Using Design Thinking to Create Engaging Canvas Discussion
Presenter: Deborah Leblang (Instructor, Art Department) and Mark Mappala (Instructor, Interior Design)
Session Details: In this presentation we will discuss how Design Thinking can help you create more interactive and engaging Canvas Discussion Threads. We will examine case study examples as well as explore opportunities to transform your existing coursework using a Design Thinking mindset.

Topic: Identity, Your Avatar, and You!
Presenter: Drew Stone (XR Lab Coordinator)
Session Details: In this online workshop, you’ll use the online avatar builder ReadyPlayerMe [https://readyplayer.me/] to create a virtual representation of yourself or persona. You can be confident that your virtual hair and stylish outfit will be ready for your online engagements in many virtual spaces like VR Chat and Spatial.io!

Topic: Perusall Playbook: Strategies for Designing Impactful Learning Experiences
Presenter: Jeremiah Allen (Instructor, First Year Seminar) & Jennifer Lê ( Instructor, Sociology)
Session Details: Tired of dull and pat interactions in Canvas discussions that feel more like a transaction to earn a grade than a full-fledged conversation? Learn how to create more dynamic, engaged, and interactive experiences using Perusall, an college educator-designed, social annotation tool that helps students learn how to read more effectively and collaboratively.

Topic: Cidi Labs: Tips to use Today! (Beginner)
Presenter: Amilee Roberge (Instructor, Basic & Transitional Studies) & Morgan Olson (OETA Project Coordinator)
Session Details: Improve your students’ course experience with fresh CidiLabs tips and designs. Come play with buttons, columns, expanders, favorites, and image styling.

Topic: Hyflex and Beyond!
Presenters: Elizabeth Zahrt Geib (Assoc Dir of Instruct Design, Elearning) & Donna S. Miguel (Assistant Dean, Arts and Humanities Division)
Session Details: Are you curious about what it takes to run an effective hyflex couse? In this design lab, we’ll explore the relationship between the classroom environment (available technology), pedagogical practices, and Canvas design to support student engagement no matter their physical location.
