Studio Q, XR and Multimedia Labs

Studio Q

The Q Room is available for producing educational video recordings in multiple ways: using the Lightboard, camcorder, computer screens, PowerPoint, or the document camera (in any combination). We have a Windows machine and an iMac with Panopto, OBS, Camtasia Studio, the full Adobe Creative Cloud, and Quicktime for recording and editing.

Studio Q (D126-Q): Video Capture Room with Lightboard

Before your first visit to Studio Q / The Q Room, you should already be familiar with Panopto, our officially-supported video-capture software. Then, the first time you visit, you’ll be accompanied by a staff member who will show you around — how to turn on the room lights, the light board, the camera, etc.

Equipment available

  • Lightboard
  • Video camera
  • Wireless lapel mic
  • Windows 10 PC with Panopto
  • 27″ iMac with Panopto
  • Wolfvision document camera

Best Practices

Some best practices when using the Lightboard:

Clothing:

  • Dark clothing works best
  • No complex patterns (no plaids, polka-dots, etc.)
  • Consider wearing a button-down shirt, since you’ll need to clip a lapel mic on your front.

Writing on the Lightboard:

  • Try not to write in the space directly between your face and the camera.
  • Consider the placement of your material into specific areas or zones, with your face as the reference point.
  • Write on the left and right sides of the board, leaving room for your face.
  • If you’re right-handed, write mostly on the right side of the board; if you’re left-handed, write mostly on the left side of the board.

Presentation:

  • Look at the camera: that is where your audience is.
  • If you need notes, use a small sheet of paper that you can hold in your hand. It’s less distracting than using a laptop off to the side.

Accessibility:

  • Since you will be recording videos using Panopto, the same accessibility rules apply when you’re making any other kind of video: your videos MUST be captioned.

Schedule Studio Q to Use the Lightboard

Use the link below to view the open schedule in Studio Q. Half-hour slots are available during the Interactive eLearning Center’s open hours.

How To Reserve Studio Q for Recording a Video using Panopto

Steps:

  1. If you have a Faculty role in Canvas, you already have access to Panopto. Panopto can be used only for instructional purposes. View the Panopto guide for detailed directions on how to use this tool.
  2. Take a Panopto Workshop offered multiple times every quarter at Interactive eLearning.
  3. Take a Studio Q Workshop on how to use the lights, camera, and Lightboard set-up. The workshop basically teaches how to turn on/off the devices, and how to properly clean the Lightboard. This workshop is by appointment only. Contact Interactive eLearning or call 425-564-4210.
  4. Studio Q has a video camera on a tripod, and a Lightboard ready to use. Instructors just need to log-in to the computer to access Panopto in their Canvas classes.
  5. Schedule the room via Request Center, or contact Interactive eLearning, or call 425-564-4210.
  6. Come in and make your recording in Studio Q, using any combination of the room equipment or your laptop w/camera. After enabling automatic-captioning in Panopto, your auto-captioned video should be ready within an hour or two.

After you’ve learned how to use the room, all you really need is to jump straight to Step 5 – subsequent recording sessions just get easier and faster.
