<\/a>To be FERPA compliant please follow these steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>A. Course Settings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Note: <\/strong>Student comments are disabled by default on Announcements in Canvas courses. Do not modify this setting in merged courses. Re-check the settings so that they comply with FERPA restrictions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Go to Course Settings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Click on More Options.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Unselect the three options shown below.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    You can also disable student ability to create Discussion Topics in the Discussion Tool<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Note: The option that allows students to create new Discussion topics must be disabled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Go to Discussions and click the gear icon<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    2. Un-check the Create discussion topics option<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    3. Save Settings<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      <\/a>B. Course Content in your Primary Section<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      Faculty must Hide\/Remove the People, Chat, Conferences and Collaborations course navigation tabs from their Canvas course site to restrict students\u2019 ability to view and interact with another course section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      1. Go to Course Settings<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      2. Navigation Tab<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      3. Disable items like People, Chat, Conferences, Collaborations<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      4. Save the settings.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

        <\/a>C. Sending a message to all students using the Canvas Inbox:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

        There are two options for sending a message in Canvas and staying FERPA compliant with combined courses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          \n
        1. When composing a message, check the box that says \u201csend an individual message to each recipient.<\/u>\u201d This will prevent students from sending a \u201creply all\u201d response or seeing to whom the message was sent.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        2. Select the address book in the \u201cTo\u201d box and then select \u201ccourse sections.\u201d This will allow you to send a message to students in a specific section. This is beneficial if you want students to be able to \u201creply all\u201d to fellow section members.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
