{"id":109,"date":"2013-11-15T11:34:45","date_gmt":"2013-11-15T19:34:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/eli\/?page_id=109"},"modified":"2026-08-19T13:08:03","modified_gmt":"2026-08-19T20:08:03","slug":"esl-community-program","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/eli\/esl-community-program\/","title":{"rendered":"ELI Community Program"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This program offers classes in English to non-native speakers in the local community.&nbsp; People from a variety of backgrounds choose to study in our Community Program:&nbsp; Au Pairs, immigrants, L-2 visa holders, H-4 visa holders, permanent residents, and US citizens.&nbsp; Each class has a short description but is unique from quarter to quarter.&nbsp; The classes are designed to provide instruction in a particular skill (grammar, speaking, vocabulary, test preparation, etc.) but students and teachers work together to shape the class to meet the needs, interests, and levels of the majority.&nbsp; These classes are cost-effective and meet three days week, with additional practice done online.&nbsp; The classes are one quarter in duration (i.e. about 12 weeks.)&nbsp; <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ELI Community classes being offered in Fall 2026 are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pronunciation &amp; Accent Reduction (<strong>5 CR<\/strong>)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students learn and practice specific difficult sounds, proper mouth position, stress, intonation, and rhythm, and how to assess and improve their own pronunciation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-vertical is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-4fc3f8e1 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Course Outcomes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Explain and say American English sounds and clusters.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Explain and say minimal pairs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Explain and say sentence stress and intonation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Explain key differences between your first language and American English, and reduce these differences<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Evaluate and modify your accent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This class meets Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 10:30am to 11:20am. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">TOEFL Preparation (<strong>5 CR<\/strong>)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students improve their test-taking skills, practice taking the TOEFL, IELTS, and DET (Duolingo English Test), and improve their listening comprehension, structure, and reading skills by focusing on specific test-type exercises. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-vertical is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-4fc3f8e1 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Course Outcomes: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use test-taking skills to manage time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Listen for key words, idioms, time words, main ideas, and negatives.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Infer meaning in conversations and lectures.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use correct grammar.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Read and skim, scan, infer, guess vocabulary from context, and identify attitudes and key ideas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This class meets Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 11:30am to 12:20pm<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-bc-orange-color has-text-color\">Admission and Registration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Follow the next steps to apply and register for community classes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/apply.ctc.edu\/user\">Apply to Bellevue College<\/a> under &#8220;Non-Degree Program.&#8221; <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Submit an <a href=\"https:\/\/forms.bellevuecollege.edu\/bats\/eli-community-program-interest-form\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/forms.bellevuecollege.edu\/bats\/eli-community-program-interest-form\/\">ELI Interest Form<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We recommend you apply early to secure seats in the classes you are interested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-bc-orange-color has-text-color\">Tuition and fees\/Payment Methods<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cost of each class is $680.
