After receiving his BA at the College of William and Mary, he earned his MA and PhD in English Language and Literature from the University of Washington. He has taught composition, developmental English, college readiness, and technical writing courses at various institutions, including Brightpoint Community College, Seattle University, Holy Names University, and the University of Washington.
