To ground this work practically, faculty participants are asked to bring a film or documentary they wish to use as a primary text in an existing or future curriculum. The first workshop introduces mise-en-scène analysis and demonstrates template-based scaffolding for shot-by-shot analysis, breaking the process down so instructors can easily replicate it with their selected film. The second workshop transitions from collaborative discussion to assessment design; faculty participants will practice leading peers through a selected scene, then learn how to translate that dialogue into an actionable written prompt or classroom activity. Through integrated Canvas modules, instructors will share their experiences with narrative films and documentaries and collaborate on course planning to build lessons that teach students how to critically analyze audience, rhetoric, and authorial intention.

Film analysis constitutes a high-impact teaching practice that empowers humanities and social science students to critique contemporary texts and analyze systemic inequities, including racism, misogyny, classism, homophobia, and transphobia. The ubiquity of mobile devices and online environments has shifted how students communicate; they compose visual, audio, and film artifacts daily. Privileging film analysis prioritizes these digital assets, validating and incorporating students’ existing communication skills. By analyzing film alongside written texts, students better comprehend close reading as a transferable skill set, expand their writing abilities, and diversify themselves culturally and professionally.

Participants in this workshop will explore several guiding questions: What interdisciplinary connections occur when analyzing visual, audio, and film artifacts alongside written texts? How does engaging with contemporary media accentuate discussions of class, race, gender, and sexuality? How does multimodality develop critical communication skills and improve digital literacy?

8 PD Hours; $250 stipend for attending both sessions & completing workshop activities and a final deliverable.

12 Seats: Register Here

Registration Deadline: October 13

Open to faculty.  For more information, contact Ryan Youell, A&H.

2 Tuesdays, 2:30-4:00 p.m., October 27 & November 10; Online Designed for faculty in the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, this interactive workshop series explores how film analysis fosters active learning, leverages 21st-century contexts, and supports visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners.
