There are two basic resume formats: chronological and functional. A chronological resume lists your experience in reverse chronological order (i.e., your most current job first). A functional resume is organized according to your skills. Each format has unique advantages\u2014the chronological resume is most commonly used and widely accepted; the functional style offers more flexibility.<\/p>\n
You may want to use a chronological style when:<\/p>\n
\u2666 You want to emphasize advancement to progressive levels of responsibility (e.g., customer services representative\u2026department manager\u2026district manager\u2026regional manager\u2026).
\n\u2666 You want to illustrate a stable work history.
\n\u2666 Your current job is in the same field as the position for which you are applying.
\n\u2666 You are applying for a job in a conservative field or industry (i.e., healthcare, HR).
\n\u2666 A potential employer is likely to prefer a more traditional looking resume.<\/p>\n
You may want to use a functional format when:<\/p>\n
\u2666 Your recent work experience is unrelated to your current job objective.
\n\u2666 You want to illustrate skills and accomplishments related to volunteer work, student activities, or academic experiences.
\n\u2666 Your job titles don\u2019t reflect your true level of responsibility or accomplishments.
\n\u2666 Your work history is complicated or includes stretches of unemployment (other than when you were a full-time student).
\n\u2666 You want to emphasize specific skills that are closely related to your objective.
\n\u2666 You are making a career change and you want to illustrate how skills acquired in one setting can be transferred to a new field.<\/p>\n
