International Education Week was created by the US Department of State as an “opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide.” At Bellevue College, International Education Week is an opportunity to highlight our International Education Initiatives & Learning opportunities. It also offers fun and educational opportunities for all.

Tuesday, November 13:

The Americas (Room C120)

10:00am to 12:00pm Pop-Up Library

Join us as we showcase the many articles, books, magazines, movies, and more that the library provides. We will have a “live check-out” where you can check out a book, magazine, and more during this time. Each day we will showcase a different region according to the theme of the day.

11:00am to 1:00pm Continental Immersion

Come by to experience regional food and festivities and further your knowledge of the region through fun activities and discussion with fellow students. Stop by at any time, there will always be something to experience.

3:00 to 4:00pm The World Is Our Classroom

Come and learn more about study abroad opportunities and hear faculty talk about innovative ways of taking their classrooms out into the world. Meet students who participated in the study abroad programs and learn from their stories of experiencing other cultures first hand.

4:30 to 5:30pm Dismayed, Delayed or Deported: Navigating Visa Issues in Turbulent Times

Come review the short history of U.S. Immigration policies, an overview of the departments that constitute the Department of Homeland Security and some key components of legal status for residing in the United States. This presentation will provide a general overview on the foundation of U.S. Immigration concepts but then highlight some key policy changes that are impacting international students and other applicants for visas and citizenship in the U.S.

Wednesday, November 14:

Africa and the Middle East (Room C130)

2:00 to 3:00pm Our World, Our Stories

International students come to Bellevue College from all across the globe. They bring a rich compliment of cultural backgrounds and worldly perspectives. However, adapting to life in the US can be challenging. A panel of international students will share some insight on their struggles and what has helped them be successful. Please come hear their unique stories and join the discussion.

4:00 to 5:30pm Coffee and Culture

Come check out this ongoing activity run by BC’s Global Leaders and the International Student Association (ISA). Enjoy coffee, cookies, and games while meeting new people. Learn about different games and languages from around the world.

Thursday, November 15:

  • 10:30 to 11:00am Sustainability and Tourism in Paris

    Learn about engineering, sustainable development, and technological advancements undertaken in Paris, France to combat climate change through an immersive program from the n+I engineering schools and the French Embassy in the US. BC’s Sustainability Director Amber Nicholson recently went overseas to learn about sustainability and will present on her experiences.

  • 11:45am to 12:15pm Experiencing Spain Through Food and Culture
1:00 to 2:00pm Inspiring Curiosity: Fostering Intercultural and Global Competence on Campus

Are you curious about the different ways we communicate across cultures? Would you like to learn how to include more inter-cultural understanding into your work or classroom? Come and attend a workshop facilitated by BC staff who attended the Institute for Intercultural Communication. They will share effective strategies for inter-cultural teamwork and more.

4:00 to 5:30pm iStories
Students, staff and faculty are welcome to come share a short (5 min) story about the trials and tribulations of international travel and intercultural adventure.   • 12:30 to 1:00 Tai Qi Lesson
2:30pm to 5:30pm Movie and a Taste of Thanksgiving

Come join us for a fun movie about the US Thanksgiving while enjoying food relevant to the day. There will be conversation on how other cultures celebrate holidays.
