{"id":94,"date":"2014-02-17T13:38:41","date_gmt":"2014-02-17T21:38:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/oiegi\/current-students\/advising\/academic-progress\/"},"modified":"2026-04-21T08:27:33","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T15:27:33","slug":"academic-progress","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/international\/current-students\/academic-progress\/","title":{"rendered":"Academic Progress &amp; Impact on F-1 Status"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/current-students\/academic-standing\/\">Bellevue College\u2019s Academic Standing policy<\/a>\u00a0applies to you, your F-1 status may be terminated if you are dismissed from Bellevue College.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is important to understand your transcript, course repetition, and making academic progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-mayflower-blocks-collapsibles accordion\" id=\"accordion_6a8ed029-d1bc-4aee-859e-066a362cadaa\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-mayflower-blocks-collapse card bg-info text-bg-info\"><div class=\"card-header\" id=\"heading_836a027d-3e23-4215-b0df-3e776d1e8543\"><h2 class=\"mb-0\"><button class=\"btn collapsed\" type=\"button\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-target=\"#collapse_836a027d-3e23-4215-b0df-3e776d1e8543\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"collapse_836a027d-3e23-4215-b0df-3e776d1e8543\">Understanding Your Transcript<\/button><\/h2><\/div><div id=\"collapse_836a027d-3e23-4215-b0df-3e776d1e8543\" class=\"collapse \" aria-labelledby=\"heading_836a027d-3e23-4215-b0df-3e776d1e8543\" data-parent=\"#accordion_6a8ed029-d1bc-4aee-859e-066a362cadaa\" data-bs-parent=\"#accordion_6a8ed029-d1bc-4aee-859e-066a362cadaa\"><div class=\"card-body bg-light text-dark\">\n<p>There are <strong>three types of GPA<\/strong> (Grade Point Average) listed on your transcript:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>QTRYL \u2013 Quarterly GPA<\/strong>: The average of all course grades for one specific quarter.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>CUM \u2013 Cumulative GPA<\/strong>: The average of all courses on your transcript, including ELIUP courses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>CLVL \u2013 College-Level GPA<\/strong>: The average of all courses numbered <strong>100 or higher<\/strong>. For example, ENGL 101 is a college-level course. ENGL 93 is not, because its number is below 100.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Check your Bellevue College <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/current-students\/records-grades\/view-unofficial-transcript\/\">Unofficial Transcript<\/a> <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Order an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/current-students\/records-grades\/transcript-request\/\">Official Bellevue College Transcript<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-mayflower-blocks-collapse card bg-info text-bg-info\"><div class=\"card-header\" id=\"heading_3951e90c-7221-4b48-aba3-9065d4308be0\"><h2 class=\"mb-0\"><button class=\"btn collapsed\" type=\"button\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-target=\"#collapse_3951e90c-7221-4b48-aba3-9065d4308be0\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"collapse_3951e90c-7221-4b48-aba3-9065d4308be0\">Repeated Coursework<\/button><\/h2><\/div><div id=\"collapse_3951e90c-7221-4b48-aba3-9065d4308be0\" class=\"collapse \" aria-labelledby=\"heading_3951e90c-7221-4b48-aba3-9065d4308be0\" data-parent=\"#accordion_6a8ed029-d1bc-4aee-859e-066a362cadaa\" data-bs-parent=\"#accordion_6a8ed029-d1bc-4aee-859e-066a362cadaa\"><div class=\"card-body bg-light text-dark\">\n<p>If you repeat a class, you must complete a Course Repeat Indicator Request. This can be submitted through the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/forms.bellevuecollege.edu\/studentcentral\/repeated-course\/\">Repeated Coursework Request<\/a><\/strong> form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you repeat a course, your <strong>GPA will be recalculated<\/strong> using the <strong>new grade<\/strong>. However, the original grade will still appear on your transcript with an &#8220;R&#8221; (for Repeated) next to it. The original grade is not removed but no longer affects your GPA.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-mayflower-blocks-collapse card bg-info text-bg-info\"><div class=\"card-header\" id=\"heading_56d30f4e-4e4f-494b-8c20-2e1caca271cc\"><h2 class=\"mb-0\"><button class=\"btn collapsed\" type=\"button\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-target=\"#collapse_56d30f4e-4e4f-494b-8c20-2e1caca271cc\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"collapse_56d30f4e-4e4f-494b-8c20-2e1caca271cc\">Academic Progress<\/button><\/h2><\/div><div id=\"collapse_56d30f4e-4e4f-494b-8c20-2e1caca271cc\" class=\"collapse \" aria-labelledby=\"heading_56d30f4e-4e4f-494b-8c20-2e1caca271cc\" data-parent=\"#accordion_6a8ed029-d1bc-4aee-859e-066a362cadaa\" data-bs-parent=\"#accordion_6a8ed029-d1bc-4aee-859e-066a362cadaa\"><div class=\"card-body bg-light text-dark\">\n<p>Your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/international\/current-students\/advising\/\">International Advisor<\/a> will monitor your GPA and overall academic progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>As an F-1 visa student, you are required to make <strong>normal progress<\/strong> toward completing your program by the end date listed on your I-20.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Per Bellevue College&#8217;s Academic Standards, \u201cacademic progress\u201d means&nbsp;you must maintain a <strong>cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher<\/strong> to remain in good academic standing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you do not meet academic progress requirements, you may not be able to complete your program by your I-20 end date. This may place your <strong>F-1 visa status at risk<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-white-color has-bc-blue-background-color has-text-color has-background\"><strong>English Language Institute<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>All<\/strong> grades are included in your academic transcript and are part of your&nbsp;Cumulative&nbsp;Grade Point Average&nbsp;(GPA).&nbsp;You are expected to pass all classes to progress to the next level&nbsp;every quarter.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is common to repeat a class when learning a new language skill for the first time, but it&nbsp;is also&nbsp;important to improve. Your&nbsp;instructors&nbsp;and&nbsp;your\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/international\/current-students\/advising\/\">International Advisor<\/a>\u202fwill meet with you for help if you are struggling.     <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>If you think that you are misplaced&nbsp;and wish to change your level, you must speak with all your&nbsp;instructors&nbsp;<\/em><strong><em>during the first three (3) days<\/em><\/strong><em>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/eli\/faculty\/\">The ELI Program Chair<\/a> will make the final decision based on your&nbsp;instructors\u2019&nbsp;assessments.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-mayflower-blocks-collapsibles accordion\" id=\"accordion_f2b5faca-6192-4f49-a9cf-bddb5055e0f0\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-mayflower-blocks-collapse card bg-info text-bg-info\"><div class=\"card-header\" id=\"heading_b44ddc27-1e73-4b4a-adf9-54d89502a076\"><h3 class=\"mb-0\"><button class=\"btn collapsed\" type=\"button\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-target=\"#collapse_b44ddc27-1e73-4b4a-adf9-54d89502a076\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"collapse_b44ddc27-1e73-4b4a-adf9-54d89502a076\">Getting a \u201cD\u201d or \u201cF\u201d Grade for the 1<sup>st<\/sup>&nbsp;time: Academic Warning<\/button><\/h3><\/div><div id=\"collapse_b44ddc27-1e73-4b4a-adf9-54d89502a076\" class=\"collapse \" aria-labelledby=\"heading_b44ddc27-1e73-4b4a-adf9-54d89502a076\" data-parent=\"#accordion_f2b5faca-6192-4f49-a9cf-bddb5055e0f0\" data-bs-parent=\"#accordion_f2b5faca-6192-4f49-a9cf-bddb5055e0f0\"><div class=\"card-body bg-light text-dark\">\n<p>If you&#8217;re on Academic Warning, you&#8217;ll repeat the class and meet with your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/international\/current-students\/advising\/\">International Advisor<\/a> to explore ways to improve and learn about campus resources. Teachers will know you&#8217;re repeating the class and can support you during the next quarter.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-mayflower-blocks-collapse card bg-info text-bg-info\"><div class=\"card-header\" id=\"heading_5b6d4206-757c-453c-98e3-edf7435bcd65\"><h3 class=\"mb-0\"><button class=\"btn collapsed\" type=\"button\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-target=\"#collapse_5b6d4206-757c-453c-98e3-edf7435bcd65\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"collapse_5b6d4206-757c-453c-98e3-edf7435bcd65\">Getting a \u201cD\u201d or \u201cF\u201d Grade for the 2<sup>nd<\/sup>&nbsp;time: Academic Probation<\/button><\/h3><\/div><div id=\"collapse_5b6d4206-757c-453c-98e3-edf7435bcd65\" class=\"collapse \" aria-labelledby=\"heading_5b6d4206-757c-453c-98e3-edf7435bcd65\" data-parent=\"#accordion_f2b5faca-6192-4f49-a9cf-bddb5055e0f0\" data-bs-parent=\"#accordion_f2b5faca-6192-4f49-a9cf-bddb5055e0f0\"><div class=\"card-body bg-light text-dark\">\n<p>When you get a \u201cD\u201d or an \u201cF\u201d grade for the&nbsp;<strong>same course(s)&nbsp;<\/strong>for the&nbsp;<strong>second time<\/strong>, you will be be put on Academic Probation and must repeat the course(s).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You are required to meet with your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/international\/current-students\/advising\/\">International Advisor<\/a> before the quarter starting date or during the first three (3) days of the quarter to understand and agree to the required conditions during the probation quarter:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Have a &#8220;C-&#8221; or higher in ALL classes this quarter;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Not have more than 5 absences during the quarter:&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Schedule follow-up meetings with the International Advisor during the quarter.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Understand that if you do not pass, you will be dismissed from the ELI program.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Understand that your ELI grades are included in your overall academic transcript at Bellevue College.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-mayflower-blocks-collapse card bg-info text-bg-info\"><div class=\"card-header\" id=\"heading_6295d649-e13d-4fb7-bdd1-d862c9bbdf36\"><h3 class=\"mb-0\"><button class=\"btn collapsed\" type=\"button\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-target=\"#collapse_6295d649-e13d-4fb7-bdd1-d862c9bbdf36\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"collapse_6295d649-e13d-4fb7-bdd1-d862c9bbdf36\">Getting a \u201cD\u201d or \u201cF\u201d Grade for the 3<sup>rd<\/sup>&nbsp;time: Dismissal Warning<\/button><\/h3><\/div><div id=\"collapse_6295d649-e13d-4fb7-bdd1-d862c9bbdf36\" class=\"collapse \" aria-labelledby=\"heading_6295d649-e13d-4fb7-bdd1-d862c9bbdf36\" data-parent=\"#accordion_f2b5faca-6192-4f49-a9cf-bddb5055e0f0\" data-bs-parent=\"#accordion_f2b5faca-6192-4f49-a9cf-bddb5055e0f0\"><div class=\"card-body bg-light text-dark\">\n<p>When you get a \u201cD\u201d or an \u201cF\u201d grade in the same course(s) for the third time or fail to meet the probationary conditions, you are dismissed from the ELI program. You must meet with your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/international\/current-students\/advising\/\">International Advisor<\/a> to discuss options:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Submit an appeal request: \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you have a compelling reason, you may submit a written letter to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/eli\/faculty\/\">ELI Program Chair<\/a> via email. The letter should explain the circumstances that led to your unsatisfactory academic performance in the program and outline a clear plan for improvement if continuation is approved. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The ELI Program Chair with make the final decision in consultation with your instructors. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A final decision will then be communicated in writing to you, your International Advisor and the Assistant Director of International Student Advising. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If approved, you will be required to meet with the Director of Student Success &amp; Retention in the Enrollment Services before you are allowed to enroll in ELIUP classes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Transfer to another school. You may have an out of status SEVIS record.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leave the United States immediately, (or find a different legal reason to remain here).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-white-color has-bc-blue-background-color has-text-color has-background\"><strong>College Credit<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re dismissed from Bellevue College while in a college-level program, your <strong>SEVIS record may be terminated<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you receive a notice about your <strong>Academic Standing<\/strong>, contact your <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/international\/current-students\/advising\/\">International Advisor<\/a><\/strong> immediately to discuss your options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All grades, including those from ELIUP courses, appear on your academic transcript and count toward your GPA (Grade Point Average). You are expected to make academic progress each quarter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-mayflower-blocks-collapsibles accordion\" id=\"accordion_9718f4e8-ce2d-4b75-944d-7ad0bf9ee027\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-mayflower-blocks-collapse card bg-info text-bg-info\"><div class=\"card-header\" id=\"heading_1c6d580d-a057-46f1-aab1-4d39704c8551\"><h3 class=\"mb-0\"><button class=\"btn collapsed\" type=\"button\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-target=\"#collapse_1c6d580d-a057-46f1-aab1-4d39704c8551\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"collapse_1c6d580d-a057-46f1-aab1-4d39704c8551\">Level 1: Academic Concern<\/button><\/h3><\/div><div id=\"collapse_1c6d580d-a057-46f1-aab1-4d39704c8551\" class=\"collapse \" aria-labelledby=\"heading_1c6d580d-a057-46f1-aab1-4d39704c8551\" data-parent=\"#accordion_9718f4e8-ce2d-4b75-944d-7ad0bf9ee027\" data-bs-parent=\"#accordion_9718f4e8-ce2d-4b75-944d-7ad0bf9ee027\"><div class=\"card-body bg-light text-dark\">\n<p>Bellevue College places you on Academic Concern at the end of the\u00a0<strong>first quarter<\/strong>\u00a0in which your cumulative\u00a0<strong>and\u00a0<\/strong>term GPA falls below a C average (2.0).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Academic Concern level is meant to connect you with campus resources and support services that can help you stay on track. There is no academic sanction at this level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You are not considered in good academic standing until your cumulative GPA is a 2.0 or higher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will need to complete an Academic Concern Form in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/international.bellevuecollege.edu\/index.cfm?FuseAction=Security.AngLogin\">International Student Portal.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-mayflower-blocks-collapse card bg-info text-bg-info\"><div class=\"card-header\" id=\"heading_e688decc-6399-4d80-a632-3235ed8335c9\"><h3 class=\"mb-0\"><button class=\"btn collapsed\" type=\"button\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" Intervention<\/button><\/h3><\/div><div id=\"collapse_e688decc-6399-4d80-a632-3235ed8335c9\" class=\"collapse \" aria-labelledby=\"heading_e688decc-6399-4d80-a632-3235ed8335c9\" data-parent=\"#accordion_9718f4e8-ce2d-4b75-944d-7ad0bf9ee027\" data-bs-parent=\"#accordion_9718f4e8-ce2d-4b75-944d-7ad0bf9ee027\"><div class=\"card-body bg-light text-dark\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The college places you on Academic Intervention at the end of the\u00a0<strong>second quarter<\/strong>\u00a0in which your cumulative\u00a0<strong>and<\/strong>\u00a0term GPA fall below 2.0.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On Level 2, you are required to complete an online Academic Intervention\u00a0Form via\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/international.bellevuecollege.edu\/index.cfm?FuseAction=Security.AngLogin\">International Student Portal<\/a>\u00a0and meet with your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/international\/current-students\/advising\/\">International Advisor<\/a>\u00a0at least two times\u00a0<strong>before<\/strong>\u00a0you are allowed to register for an upcoming quarter.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You are not considered in good academic standing until your cumulative GPA is a 2.0 or higher.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-mayflower-blocks-collapse card bg-info text-bg-info\"><div class=\"card-header\" data-parent=\"#accordion_9718f4e8-ce2d-4b75-944d-7ad0bf9ee027\" data-bs-parent=\"#accordion_9718f4e8-ce2d-4b75-944d-7ad0bf9ee027\"><div class=\"card-body bg-light text-dark\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The college places you on academic credit restriction at the end of the\u00a0<strong>third\u00a0<\/strong>quarter in which your cumulative\u00a0<strong>and<\/strong>\u00a0term GPA falls below a C average (2.0).\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On Level 3, you are required to complete the Academic Restriction\u00a0Form via\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/international.bellevuecollege.edu\/index.cfm?FuseAction=Security.AngLogin\">International Student Portal<\/a>\u00a0and must identify two areas where you are showing significant signs of improvement.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You must meet with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/international\/directory\/\">Assistant Director of International Student Advising<\/a>\u00a0<strong>before or on<\/strong>\u00a0the first two days of the quarter to discuss your academic strategies\/plan for success\u00a0<strong>before<\/strong>\u00a0you are allowed to enroll in classes (15 credits maximum) for the upcoming quarter.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You also must meet with the Assistant Director\u00a0every two weeks throughout the\u00a0Academic Restriction quarter.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You are not considered in good academic standing until your cumulative GPA reaches a 2.0 or higher.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-mayflower-blocks-collapse card bg-info text-bg-info\"><div class=\"card-header\" id=\"heading_e9589e02-768a-40ad-bfe8-f2a86db52786\"><h3 class=\"mb-0\"><button class=\"btn collapsed\" type=\"button\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-target=\"#collapse_e9589e02-768a-40ad-bfe8-f2a86db52786\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"collapse_e9589e02-768a-40ad-bfe8-f2a86db52786\">Level 4: Academic Dismissal<\/button><\/h3><\/div><div id=\"collapse_e9589e02-768a-40ad-bfe8-f2a86db52786\" class=\"collapse \" aria-labelledby=\"heading_e9589e02-768a-40ad-bfe8-f2a86db52786\" data-parent=\"#accordion_9718f4e8-ce2d-4b75-944d-7ad0bf9ee027\" data-bs-parent=\"#accordion_9718f4e8-ce2d-4b75-944d-7ad0bf9ee027\"><div class=\"card-body bg-light text-dark\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The college places you on academic dismissal at the end of the\u00a0<strong>fourth\u00a0<\/strong>quarter in which your cumulative\u00a0<strong>and<\/strong>\u00a0term GPA falls below a C average (2.0).\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Academic Dismissal restricts your enrollment at Bellevue College for one full academic year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You must meet with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/international\/directory\/\">Assistant Director of International Student Advising<\/a>\u00a0<strong>before<\/strong>\u00a0the upcoming quarter begins to discuss what options may be available to you at this Level 4 and to discuss your academic strategies\/plan for success\u00a0<strong>if\u00a0<\/strong>you are allowed to continue studying at Bellevue College.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You must submit an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/current-students\/academic-standing\/appeals\/\">Appeal Request\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0and submit the Academic Dismissal Form via\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/international.bellevuecollege.edu\/index.cfm?FuseAction=Security.AngLogin\">International Student Portal<\/a>\u00a0<strong>before<\/strong>\u00a0the
