John Carlos, Dave Zirin Headline MLK Jr. Celebrations

Dave Zirin and John Carlos Poster for MLK Jr. celebrationBellevue College was honored to host Olympic medalist and Civil Rights champion John Carlos and sportswriter and commentator Dave Zirin for this year’s keynote MLK address on Jan. 22 on the theme, “Dream and Act, Dr. Martin Luther King did.”

Carlos, a former track and field athlete and professional football player, was the bronze-medal winner in the 200 meters at the 1968 Summer Olympics when his Black Power salute on the podium caused much political controversy. He went on to become a founding member of the Olympic Project for Human Rights (OPHR).

Zirin writes about the politics of sports for the Nation Magazine and is the host of Sirius XM Radio’s popular weekly show, “Edge of Sports Radio.” He co-hosts the radio program “The Collision: Sports and Politics with Etan Thomas & Dave Zirin,” and is the author of A People’s History of Sports in the United States, part of Howard Zinn’s People’s History Series.

Other events included participation in the 33rd annual grassroots march and rally in Seattle; a non-violence workshop with guest speaker, Jonathan “Globe” Lewis; a screening of the documentary, Stand; and readings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s work.
