Mathematics&#8217; international equivalent is the <a title=\"Fields Medal\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/math\/links\/mathographies\/fefferman\/fields-medal\/\">Fields Medal<\/a>, which is awarded every four years to (traditionally young &#8212; under 40 year-old) mathematicians for deep work of broad impact already accomplished and for the promise of more to come. In addition to super-star status in the scientific community, Fields Medal recipients receive six-figure monetary gifts.<\/p>\n<h2>The Lebon Prize, the Hoffman Calculus Award &amp; the Bootstrap Award<\/h2>\n<p>Each June, the BC Mathematics Department celebrates outstanding student achievement in mathematics with three awards. :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4><strong><u>The Lebon\u00a0Prize:<\/u><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>(\u201cNobel\u201d spelled backward (since mathematicians cannot win the Nobel)) This is awarded to students with outstanding achievement in Mathematics. To be eligible, the student(s) must have had at least two of our 200-level classes, one of which must be Math 208, 238, 240, or 270. This award is for the \u201cbest of the best\u201d and is usually given to 1 or 2 people.<\/li>\n<li>\n<h4><strong><u>The Hoffman Calculus\u00a0Award<\/u>:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>This Award<span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-154-0\"> recognizes<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-155-0\"> outstanding<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-156-0\"> achievement<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-157-0\"> in<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-158-0\"> calculus<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-159-0\">.<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-160-0\"> El<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-161-0\">ig<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-162-0\">ibility<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-163-0\"> for<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-164-0\"> the<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-165-0\"> award<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-166-0\"> requires<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-167-0\"> successful<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-168-0\"> completion<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-169-0\"> of<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-170-0\"> Cal<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-171-0\">c<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-172-0\">ulus III<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-173-0\"> (<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-174-0\">Math<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-175-0\"> 153<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-176-0\">)<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-177-0\"> in<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-178-0\"> the<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-179-0\"> current<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-180-0\"> academic<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-181-0\"> year<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-182-0\">,<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-183-0\"> including<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-184-0\"> the<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-185-0\"> summer<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-186-0\"> semester<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-187-0\">,<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-188-0\"> with<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-189-0\"> a<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-190-0\"> grade<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-191-0\"> of<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-192-0\"> \u201c<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-193-0\">A\u201d.<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-196-0\">\u00a0Up<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-197-0\"> to<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-198-0\"> three<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-199-0\"> students<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-200-0\"> may<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-201-0\"> be<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-202-0\"> selected<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-203-0\"> for<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-204-0\"> this<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-205-0\"> award<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-206-0\"> annually<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-207-0\">.<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-208-0\"> The<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-209-0\"> award<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-210-0\"> honors<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-211-0\"> the<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-212-0\"> memory<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-213-0\"> of<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-214-0\"> Dale<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-215-0\"> Hoffman<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-216-0\">,<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-217-0\"> a<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-218-0\"> beloved<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-219-0\"> colleague<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-220-0\">,<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-221-0\"> mentor<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-222-0\">,<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-223-0\"> and<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-224-0\"> friend<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-226-0\">\u00a0who<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-227-0\"> served<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-228-0\"> as<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-229-0\"> a<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-230-0\"> mathematics<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-231-0\"> professor<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-232-0\"> for<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-233-0\"> many<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-234-0\"> years<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-235-0\"> and<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-236-0\"> regularly<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-237-0\"> taught<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-238-0\"> calculus<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f8f6k-239-0\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>\n<h4><strong><u>The Bootstrap\u00a0Award<\/u>:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>This award is for any student who had to start at BC in the pre-college math sequence and has managed to make it all the way through at least one calculus class with relatively high achievement.
