Power of One Conference: Coalition through Community

Bellevue College has been chosen to host the 2017 Student NASPA Region V Power of One Conference from April 20-22, which will develop the leadership skills of LGBTQ students and provide additional professional development for administrators, faculty/ staff and/ or advisors who support them. This year’s conference theme, “Coalition through Community”, is designed to foster an understanding of difference that also emphasizes civil discussion and social interaction when individuals or communities disagree.

“We’re proud and excited to host the 2017 Power of One Conference,” said Craig Hurd-McKenney, assistant professor of English, chair of the Bellevue College LGBTQ Task Force, and the event’s organizer. “Our goal is to provide an atmosphere that is respectful, open, and widely accessible. Every participant will most likely be at a different spot in his/ her/ their/ zir journey. But if we’re mindful that when engaging in civil discourse, levels of knowledge and experience can vary, then those differences can enhance our communities rather than diminish them.”

Keynote speakers include former Washington State Representative Brady Piñero Walkinshaw, who represented the 43rd legislative district and now lives with his husband in Capitol Hill, as well as Julie Goldman and Brandy Howard, comedic TV staff writers who have worked for Fashion Police on E! , Funny Girls on Oxygen, and have also launched their own podcast, Dumb, Gay Politics.

Breakout sessions for conference attendees will be held in six professional development tracks, including Ally Development, Gender, Social Justice, Health & Wellness, and Leadership, with topics ranging from LGBTQ Microaggressions, Trans 101 and Coalition Building to Self Defense, Queer Gaming, and Comedy Writing with Julie & Brandy.

On Friday, April 21, the general public is invited to attend a performance by Julie Goldman in the Carlson Theatre at 9:00 p.m. On Saturday, April 22, they can listen to keynote speaker Dr. Kevin Nadal at 7:30 p.m. in the Bellevue College cafeteria, and also that Saturday, attend a performance by #blacktransmagick at 8:30 p.m. in the Carlson Theatre.
