Nursing Skills Lab

The Nursing Skills Lab is a learning lab just for nursing students. You will spend time in the lab each quarter, building your skill set and testing your knowledge.

During your first year, you will learn assessment skills and nursing procedures with a combination of lecture and hands on demonstrations. Then, return to the lab for the second year to build on your skills and competencies and focus on maternal, pediatric and infant nursing care. In the final quarter of the Nursing program you will use the simulation setting to demonstrate critical thinking skills.

Electronic Classroom and Computer Lab

The fully equipped electronic classroom and computer lab provides an interactive and media rich setting for skills lectures. The classroom space includes 6 computer workstations loaded with nursing educational software.

Skills Training Lab

The skills training lab is an 8 bed, mock-up hospital space with a nurses’ station, fully equipped crash cart, medication cart, EKG machine and other clinical equipment. This give you a realistic, but safe, learning environment for nursing care.  Students and Faculty working with SimMan

You’ll practice and be evaluated on a variety of skills in the lab, including assessment and psychomotor skills. You will get to use low and mid-fidelity adult, pediatric and infant manikins to practice and demonstrate typical nursing procedures. Mid-fidelity manikins are equipped with lung, heart and bowel sounds, and the ability to verbalize responses and demonstrate variations in vital signs. In addition, as part of the learning experience, students can use a variety of skills trainers, such as IV arms, wound care manikins and central line demonstrators.

Simulation Room

The simulation room is home to SimMan, our computerized, interactive, high fidelity simulation manikin who talks, breathes, and responds like a patient. Students are able to evaluate and develop interventions for SimMan based on the signs and symptoms presented. Using pre programmed scenarios or “on the fly” programming, SimMan provides students with learning opportunities in a variety of realistic patient care situations in a safe learning environment. The simulation room is equipped with a video and audio system that allows students in the adjoining classroom to observe their classmates during simulation scenarios.
