For The Love Of Animals

Inspired by the MLK Service project making blankets and cards for patients at Seattle Children’s Hospital, our student Mallorie began making blankets for animals at the Humane Society. As on of the overall goals of OLS to make each graduate of our program a contributing citizen, we feel a deep sense of pride to see Mallorie contributing in such an impactful way to her community for a cause she is passionate about. Below Mallorie shares her story about why she decided to embark on this project and what it means to her.

Mallorie holding blanket Ever since I was little I have had a special connection with animals that I can’t explain. Animals are my heart, my world, and my friends, and being around them is therapeutic for me. When I was little, and my family and I were living in California, we rescued a baby deer. The mother had gotten hit by a car. We took the baby fawn back to our house and took care of it while we waited for the wildlife individuals to come and get it. I ended up naming the baby deer Bambi.

I decided to make these blankets for the Humane Society because even though I know shelters do provide things for animals to have comfort, sometimes they do end up sleeping in their kennels on a cold floor. I wanted to bring warmth, comfort, and love to the animals.

I had never made these before until I did them at my college’s MLK Service Project. We make these blankets every year for patients at Seattle Children’s Hospital, and I thought it was such an amazing thing to do. One little act of kindness for anything can make the world of difference. I feel that nowadays a lot of people just focus on themselves and don’t really realize that there are animals that want and need our help. I started by making three blankets, and of course I will continue to make more of these for the shelter as well as gifts for my friends and family pets.
I want animals to always see from me that they have a special place in this world. No animal deserves to be ignored or abandoned. They deserve all the love they can get, and love is what they will always get from me. I don’t think I could function right without being around animals. Especially my own.
