Calculating in Reverse

Students enrolled in Personal Finance took a quiz this quarter where the answers were shown and students needed to figure out the steps that would lead to the answer. Prior to starting the group quiz, three different calculations were reviewed by the class to give students a bit of a warm-up. Then they worked in groups and, if they finished early, were allowed to assist other students who asked for help.

Asking students to reverse engineer answers engaged their critical thinking and problem solving skills. Working with others rather than individually gave students the opportunity to practice the Collaboration and Leadership Performance Indicators.

Talking with students about the experience afterward confirmed that a higher level of learning was achieved versus if they were given a more traditional quiz that would have tested their ability to remember and execute the correct calculations.
