Five Pillars of Success

Three young adult male students stand in front of a poster that says "Smile"

This quarter students taking our Office Procedures and Customer Service course were asked to write their response to questions about the five communication skills that are essential to success in face-to-face customer service. Flip charts were posted on the walls, and after each flip chart was completed students participated in a class discussion based on:

two young adult students stand in front of a poster explaining greeting customers
  • Why should you greet the customer?
  • Why is is important to make eye contact?
  • Why Smile?
  • What is the importance of using open body language?
  • Why thank the customer?

This course is designed to teach students entry-level office procedures and customer service skills used in the workplace. Students practice the skills and techniques of good customer service through various activities. These activities help students understand the important relationship a company has between the customer and the employee:

  • Understanding common courtesy- shows your willingness to serve.
  • Making eye contact reassures customers that your attention is focused on them.
  • If you smile, you’ll put the customer at ease.
  • Open body language tells the customer that you are willing to help.
  • Saying Thank You reinforces that you value the customer’s business.

Office Procedures and Customer Service is one of the many courses OLS Students take to obtain their associate degree from OLS. More information about our curriculum is available on our website. To learn more about our program register for an Information Session.
