Adjusting to Distance Learning

When the Covid-19 crisis hit, OLS students were suddenly thrown into distance learning. They quickly had to find ways to adjust and cope with the reality of learning in a completely new and, to many, foreign environment.

The fourth year students were asked to reflect on adjusting to distance learning. Specifically, they were asked to talk about:

  • A challenge you encountered with distance learning and how you dealt with that challenge
  • Something you learned about yourself during this period of adjustment
  • What you are most looking forward to after completing your internship and graduating from Bellevue College

Here are some of their responses to their adjustments to online learning:

“When I first got on this online course I was a little stressed because I had never been in an online class before, so it was a learning process for me and probably the rest of my classmates. The more I used MS Teams the more I was able to lower my stress level and now I know how to find my way in MS Teams.” – Matthias

“Something that has stuck with me throughout the online classes is to remember that anything can happen, and that can have you working from home, or going to school from home in this case. Has it been hard? Yes. Has it been unique? Yes. Have me and my group been making the best of the situation? You bet.”  ~Brandon

“I personally feel like switching to online classes was not that hard after I learned how to find the class using Microsoft teams. I have learned to be more patient with myself and others. Even though we might not have a physical graduation ceremony or get to do some of the fun traditions passed 4th years got to have, we should still be thankful for online learning and our teachers who are so diligent in teaching us even if it is online teaching.” ~ Chelsea

“What I learned about myself is that I am the same with distance learning as I was in class. I needed help figuring out how things worked in class at first. But then I eventually learned how things work in class. Same goes for distance learning. I needed help with it at first, but now I know how it works.” ~ Connor

“I have learned that I’m more conscientious in my Hawaii home then in Bellevue. I’m more interested in exercising since I am stuck at home. The challenge I have encountered with distance learning is the time difference. I have to get up at 4am to get ready and be awake for class starting at 5am (8am on the west coast). I have dealt with this challenge by setting my alarm on both my iPad and phone every 5 minutes for 30 minutes to make sure I get out of bed. I try go to bed earlier so I am more awake in the morning.” ~Keoni

“In this highly unusual time, a challenge I have been experiencing as far as distance learning goes is staying awake and losing track of my attention span. I have been dealing with this obstacle by waking up at least a couple hours early, making at least one cup of coffee, and sitting on the couch and relaxing with my coffee so that I can become awake. Something interesting I’ve learning as far as adjustments go is that no matter how uncertain a situation can get, anything is possible and technology plays a huge part in how we learn in this day and age.”  ~Eirian

OLS fourth year students also were faced with the idea of completing their college experience without the benefit of a graduation ceremony. Commencement for many is remembered as symbol of a significant accomplishment. For OLS students, it caps off their efforts to successfully earn their AA degree.

OLS students as a whole, and fourth year students in particular, have adjusted and are making the most of this new experience. Please, if your given the opportunity, congratulate our 4th year students in their stunning accomplishment!

Field Experience is one of the many courses OLS Students take to obtain their associate degree from OLS. More information about our curriculum is available on our website. To learn more about our program register for an upcoming Information Session.
