VP Debate Watch Party

The OLS Citizenship class watched the Vice President Debate virtually together on October 7. They watched via YouTube which allowed them to post comments with their opinions about what the candidates said.

Course instructors asked questions during the evening about what the students thought about the debate and to discuss how the debate is an example of the freedom of speech. Students also discussed the importance of voting in the upcoming election. The students generated 502 comments during the 90-minute debate.

Throughout the Citizenship course, students discuss current cultural and environmental issues that affect the point of view of a citizen. The VP debate allowed the students to see how these issues were discussed among the candidates. The students found that the moderator of the debate had a tough time controlling the candidates from going over their allotted time, which led to an interesting development. The students decided to keep track of the number of times each candidate went over time and track that online.
