OLS Students Celebrate BC Disability Pride Month

At OLS, we are always bringing awareness of disability pride every quarter with our students in one form or another. October is Disability Pride Month at Bellevue College, and students in our Intro to Communications and Controversial Issues in the Workplace courses celebrated in a couple different ways.

Controversial Issues in the Workplace

Students in the Controversial Issues in the Workplace course have been identifying and discussing discrimination in the media. In addition, students learned about Intersectionality, the idea that people have multiple, three-dimensional identities that together form a unique individual. These identities, such as being disabled, LGBTQ+, or of a certain race, religion, or ethnic background, are not mutually exclusive; one identity is not primary or dominant over the others. For example, someone’s disabled identity is just one part of who they are as a person. They are just as likely to be proud of being disabled as they are of their other identities. Encouraging young people to not only accept their disabled identity, but incorporate it into their other identities, can be a healthy way to foster disability pride. Here is a collage representing positive perceptions of the disability community created by 4th year students TJ, Austin, and Trevor.

Intro to Communications

1st year students in Introductions to Communications celebrated Disability Pride Month safely at home by decorating their BC tee-shirt with their classmates during online class. Students inspired one another with sayings, quotes, or drawings of what Disability Pride means to them.

Goodie boxes from the BC DRC office also included:

  • Decorative supplies for the T-Shirt
  • Disability Pride coloring pages
  • Color changing cup with the DRC logo
  • Fidget spinner with highlighters and BC logo
