Please join us in congratulating Occupational & Life Skills Bellevue College student Daniel for earning four medals in the Special Olympics NW Regional Athletics Competition.
Daniel first competed in basketball and track at the Special Olympics when he was younger but stopped when he began track and cross country during high school. This year, he decided to compete again, first in basketball. His team, Marysville Bigfoot, took gold at state.
Then, on April 29, at the Special Olympics NW Regional Athletics Competition, Daniel competed in track. He won gold in running the long jump and the 800-meter run and silver in the 1500-meter and 4×100-meter relay.
“I was completely blown away when I took first in two events,” he says. “I was very surprised. In the running long jump, I didn’t do well on the first two jumps. But on my third and final jump, I remembered being taught that I needed to jump up high, and it would power me forward. I guess it worked.”
It most certainly did! Daniel’s wins in April solidified his spot to compete at the State Spring Games June 10-11, 2023.
And Daniel has some words of advice for others who want to compete at the Special Olympics: “My advice to someone who would like to compete someday is that you should. Be willing to work hard; you will get out of it what you put into it. You meet a lot of nice new people.”
Way to go, Daniel! What a fantastic accomplishment.
