The OLS Bellevue College first-year cohort delved into the world of disability disclosure this quarter in their Learning Strategies course. Students worked collaboratively in groups to understand, address and find solutions to the obstacles encountered in disclosing disabilities.
Each group worked together to craft a script that represented a real-life scenario where individuals with disabilities might face challenges in disclosure. These scenarios covered a variety of environments and interactions, allowing the students to explore the nuances of disclosure across different settings.
The groups were also assigned example scenarios to review. For each scenario, the groups had to identify the barrier or obstacle the young person in each scenario faced and come up with a list of possible accommodations using their creativity and resources like askjan.org and their classroom assignments.
Students were assigned roles in their groups to help them accomplish their tasks. Roles included:
Team captain/facilitator: Made sure every group member gave input on the situation and solution.
Timekeeper: Monitored time and regularly advised group members of how much time was left. Students had twenty minutes to complete the activity.
Recorder/reporter: Typed the group’s answers and ideas and submitted them to Canvas.
Finally, each group brought these scenarios to life by acting out the scenarios with their groups. These presentations helped the students understand how these scenarios may play out in the real world.
