{"id":3484,"date":"2024-10-17T14:24:01","date_gmt":"2024-10-17T21:24:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/ols-redesign-dev\/2024\/10\/17\/ols-students-attend-japan-week-at-bellevue-college\/"},"modified":"2025-07-14T15:04:44","modified_gmt":"2025-07-14T22:04:44","slug":"ols-students-attend-japan-week-at-bellevue-college","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/ols\/2024\/10\/17\/ols-students-attend-japan-week-at-bellevue-college\/","title":{"rendered":"OLS Students Attend Japan Week at Bellevue College"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"block-wrapper alignstandard\">\n<p>This fall, Occupational &amp; Life Skills Bellevue College (OLSBC) students experienced Bellevue College\u2019s eighth annual <a href=\"https:\/\/studentweb.bellevuecollege.edu\/japan-week\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Japan Week<\/a>, a series of events presented by the BC Japanese Culture Exchange Club which celebrates Japanese culture and history.<br><br>In every OLSBC course, students take part in a community activity directly related to their coursework. The goal of community activities include:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper alignstandard\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Apply academic knowledge in a real-world setting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Learn about business operations and a variety of occupations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Learn networking skills and exhibit professional behaviors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper alignstandard\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What OLSBC Students Learned Throughout Japan Week<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper alignstandard\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/ols\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/450\/2025\/05\/1000005811-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"OLS Student attend Japan Week\" class=\"wp-image-16255\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper alignstandard\">\n<p>A few of the OLSBC fall courses attended various events throughout Japan Week. Here are a few of the things they learned about. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper alignstandard\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dorayaki Making Workshop: Presented by Bellevue College Japanese Students.<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper alignstandard\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/ols\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/450\/2025\/05\/1000005786-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"OLS students participate in Japan Week\" class=\"wp-image-16258\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper alignstandard\">\n<p>A classic Japanese confection, Dorayaki is a honey pancake sandwich filled with sweet red bean paste called anko. It\u2019s a popular snack and dessert among children and adults alike in Japan. OLSBC students enrolled in Nutrition, Health &amp; Fitness got hands-on experience mixing ingredients, cooking the dorayaki pancake, and, of course, eating their creations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper alignstandard\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-mayflower-blocks-row row\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-mayflower-blocks-column col-md\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/ols\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/450\/2025\/05\/1000005791-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"OLS students participate in Japan Week\" class=\"wp-image-16257\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-mayflower-blocks-column col-md\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/ols\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/450\/2025\/05\/1000005806-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"OLS students participate in Japan Week\" class=\"wp-image-16259\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper alignstandard\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The WWII Forced Incarceration of Japanese\/Japanese Americans and Its Legacy: Presented by Dr. Larry Matsuda.<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper alignstandard\">\n<p>Our students taking Cultural Awareness attended this presentation by Dr. Matsuda, who was born in Minidoka, Idaho, where his family was incarcerated during World War II. Through his photos, poems, and books, he explained the injustices suffered by Japanese and Japanese Americans and how it affected many innocent people\u2019s lives and futures. In addition, he discussed the relevance of the incarceration today.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper alignstandard\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Japanese Business Etiquette: Do\u2019s and Don\u2019ts: Presented by the Japan Business Association of Seattle.<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper alignstandard\">\n<p>OLSBC students enrolled in Controversial Issues in the Workplace were given an overview of the dos and don\u2019ts of Japanese business etiquette for successful interactions in Japan. They gained insight into customs and traditions rooted in respect and formality.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper alignstandard\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Student Comments About Their Experience at Japan Week Events<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper alignstandard\">\n<p>&#8220;What I enjoyed about Japan Week was definitely the Doriyaki making.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper alignstandard\">\n<p>&#8220;I enjoyed guest speaker Lawrence Matsuda iterating his vivid anecdotes, poems, exhibiting photos, and books about incarcerated Japanese Americans.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper alignstandard\">\n<p>&#8220;I just loved immersing myself in Japanese culture.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper alignstandard\">\n<p>&#8220;Doriyaki making not only is it fun, but it\u2019s a cool way to learn things about Japanese culture.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper alignstandard\">\n<p>&#8220;My favorite thing at Japan week was the music.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper alignstandard\">\n<p>&#8220;I enjoyed seeing my classmates and friends over the Japan Week.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper alignstandard\">\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper alignstandard\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About OLS Bellevue College<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper alignstandard\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/ols\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Occupational &amp; Life Skills Bellevue College<\/a>&nbsp;is an associate degree program for students with learning disabilities.
