We are pleased to announce our student Joey received the Advocate of the Year Award from Allies in Advocacy for his efforts on behalf of the Healthcare for Workers with Disabilities Bill (HB1199) which passed earlier this year. \u201cI\u2019m so thankful to advocate for all the people whose voices deserve to be heard,\u201d said Joey. \u201cIt was an honor to help with this bill.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

On August 20, 2019 Allies in Advocacy held their first Leadership Forum at the SeaTac Airport Conference Center. The purpose of the forum was to bring people in the developmental disability community together to learn more about legislative issues and public policy, speak out on important issues, build a coalition within the developmental disability community, and more. In addition to the day\u2019s agenda was an awards ceremony honoring people who have made an impact for the developmental disability community this year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

\u201cWe voted on and selected Joey because of the incredible advocacy he did passing the healthcare for workers with disabilities bill (HB 1199<\/a>) which essentially allows disabled people to work without losing health care, by buying into Medicaid,\u201d said Shaun Bickley, a Board Member of Allies in Advocacy. Rep Noel Frame, who also worked on HB1199, was awarded as Legislator of the Year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

In July Joey also received the Community Change Champion Award from The Arc of King County at their 26th<\/sup> annual Potluck Picnic and Inclusion Awards.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
