The Jeanne Clery Act <\/strong>is a consumer protection law which was passed in 1990 in the hopes of providing insight into campus safety policies and crime statistics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On April 5, 1986, a college student named Jeanne Clery was raped and murdered at Lehigh University by another student while he was in the process of burglarizing her dorm room. After her death, her parents learned that there had been numerous reports of burglaries because residents of the dorm had been propping open the auto-locking doors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Clery Act requires all colleges and universities that participate in federal financial aid programs to keep and disclose information about crime on and near their respective campuses and train certain individuals with significant responsibilities for campus and student activities, such as campus police\/security, resident assistants, coaches, and club advisors, among others on how to report crimes which may be disclosed to them.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
