Their purpose is to stop the shooting as quickly as possible. Rescue teams and emergency medical personnel will follow behind to help.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You must remain calm and do as the officers tell you. Put down any bags or packages you may be carrying and keep your hands visible at all times. Avoid making quick movements toward the officers, such as attempting to hold on to them for safety. If you know the location of the shooter, tell the officers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Expectations from responding officers:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They may arrive in any size team or as an individual.\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They may be wearing patrol uniforms, civilian clothing, or bulletproof vests with other tactical equipment.\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Officers may be armed with rifles, shotguns or handguns, and they may use pepper spray or tear gas to control the situation.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you have reached a safe location, officers may detain you until the situation is under control and all witnesses have been identified and questioned.\u202f&nbsp; Please keep in mind that entire area is a crime scene. Fine<br>particles (2.5 micrometers in diameter and smaller) come<br>from power plants, industrial processes, vehicle tailpipes,<br>woodstoves, and wildfires. Coarse particles (between 2.5<br>and 10 micrometers) come from crushing and grinding<br>operations, road dust, and some agricultural operations.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is particle pollution a problem?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Particle pollution causes a number of serious health<br>problems, including coughing, wheezing, reduced lung<br>function, asthma attacks, heart attacks and strokes. It also<br>is linked to early death in people with heart or lung disease.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do I need to be concerned?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s always smart to pay attention to your air quality, but it\u2019s especially true for people who may be at greater risk. On days when the AQI is forecast to be unhealthy, check AirNow for your current air quality and take simple steps to reduce your exposure, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Choose a less intense activity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shorten your outdoor activities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reschedule activities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Exercise away from busy roads<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When particle levels are high outdoors, they can be high indoors too. Keep particles lower indoors:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reduce your use of fireplaces and wood stoves. And don\u2019t use candles or smoke indoors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use HEPA air filters (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/indoor-air-quality-iaq\">U.S. Environmental Protection Agency<\/a>) in your HVAC system.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Buy or make your own portable air cleaner designed to reduce particles indoors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can I help reduce particle pollution?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes! Here are a few tips:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Drive less: bike or walk, carpool, use public transportation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use energy efficiently; choose ENERGY STAR certified products.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For cleaner heat, upgrade to a heat pump, electric heat, or ductless heat pumps.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep car, boat and other engines tuned.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you use wood for heat, burn it efficiently. Suspended operations only occur when:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Current local weather conditions severely restrict travel to and from campus; or&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Campus roadways, parking lots, paths, and buildings cannot be maintained for public safety.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Public Safety Department initiates the suspended operations decision process when weather conditions begin to worsen. The Vice President of Administrative Services and the President are involved in making a decision to suspend campus operations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Four decisions are possible:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>No suspended operations\u2014Classes will meet and offices will remain open as usual;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Delayed opening\/early suspended operations\u2014Classes before or after a stated time will not be held and college office hours will have a delayed start or early ending time;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Partial closure\u2014Classes will not meet but college offices will be open for business; or&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Total closure\u2014Classes will not meet and offices will be closed. Essential personnel may be asked to report to work if possible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:3px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>Notification Methods and Procedures<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>BC provides a number of distribution methods for getting this information to you. It is highly encouraged that departments also use telephone trees to inform staff members of any suspended operations or emergency. The following procedures and notification methods are used for campus suspended operations:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On-campus notifications (if a decision to suspend operations is made during the day): The President\u2019s Office or the Vice President of Administrative Services sends an e-mail to BC network users. Public Safety will immediately notify instructors and students in classrooms.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Off-campus notifications (at all times of the day): The college will make suspended operations information available to people off-campus in the following ways:&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Rave Alerts (BC\u2019s emergency notification system) \u2013 BC will send an e-mail and\/or text message as soon as possible when the college suspends operations due to weather or any other emergency. Sign up for this\u202f<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/emergency-alerts\/\">service here.<\/a> This system receives the highest priority among several channels the college uses to communicate emergency messages to students, faculty, and staff.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>FlashAlert \u2013 BC (and many other Puget Sound area schools) posts emergency communications on the\u202f<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flashalert.net\/\">FlashAlert<\/a>\u202fwebsite. This is the source the media uses to get their closure\/suspended operations\/delayed start information and will be BC\u2019s second priority in disseminating emergency messages. You may subscribe to FlashAlert\u2019s email and text message\u202f<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flashalert.net\/id\/BellevueCollege\">service here.<\/a> Most TV and radio stations broadcast these messages periodically. Please remember, TV and radio stations do not name schools that will be staying open\/operational. If BC is not mentioned, assume that classes will meet and offices are open.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>BC\u2019s emergency hotline message \u2013 Call (425)401-6680 for emergency information, including campus suspended operations information.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>BC\u2019s home page \u2013 If campus operations are suspended, the\u202f<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/\">College\u2019s website<\/a>\u202fwill provide information on the suspended operations.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>Reasonable Effort&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If the college is not suspending operations, faculty, and staff are expected to make a reasonable effort to come to campus and maintain services for students. However, the College does not expect people to put themselves in danger. If there is a weather emergency, use your best judgment to determine if you are able to make it to campus. Check traffic advisories and other information resources to make an informed decision based on your local conditions and circumstances. Ensure that proper department protocols are followed for calling in absent when you are unable to make it to campus.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-mayflower-blocks-collapse card bg-primary text-bg-primary\n\t\t text-white\"><div class=\"card-header\" id=\"heading_def655f7-0457-427d-a6ab-8c7fd2c1491e\"><h3 class=\"mb-0\"><button class=\"btn collapsed text-white\" type=\"button\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-target=\"#collapse_def655f7-0457-427d-a6ab-8c7fd2c1491e\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"collapse_def655f7-0457-427d-a6ab-8c7fd2c1491e\">Fire<\/button><\/h3><\/div><div id=\"collapse_def655f7-0457-427d-a6ab-8c7fd2c1491e\" class=\"collapse \" aria-labelledby=\"heading_def655f7-0457-427d-a6ab-8c7fd2c1491e\" data-parent=\"#accordion_4f335704-64ed-47ce-815d-923de2450ffa\" data-bs-parent=\"#accordion_4f335704-64ed-47ce-815d-923de2450ffa\"><div class=\"card-body bg-light text-dark\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Fire<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you hear a fire alarm, leave the area immediately and follow the evacuation procedures to your nearest or safest\u202f<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/publicsafety\/campus-emergency-maps\/\">evacuation zone<\/a>. Remain in your evacuation zone until otherwise directed by Public Safety or Fire Department personnel.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Attempt to prevent others from entering the area.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do not use elevators to evacuate. Assist others in need if possible.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid locations close to the fire, especially if it is near a gas line.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do not re-enter the building until you are authorized to do so by Public Safety or emergency personnel&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Fire Pull Stations\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you suspect or witness a fire near or inside of a building with no alarm sounding:&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pull an evacuation alarm pull station for the building. Each building has multiple pull stations, which will activate the evacuation alarm. Hold the extinguisher with the nozzle pointing away from you and release the locking mechanism.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A<\/strong>im low. Do not allow students to use telephones or cell phones.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Instructors who have students on the athletic fields should gather all the students in the safest location possible and await further instructions from law enforcement officials.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Instructors should quickly check halls\/common areas and usher students into classrooms \u2013 even if they aren\u2019t in your class.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Emergency Lockdown Key System (ELKS)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2026\/01\/Emergency-Lockdown-Key-System.docx\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/39\/2026\/01\/Emergency-Lockdown-Key-System-1.pdf\">View and download the following Emergency Lockdown Key System (ELKS)<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the case of a campus emergency requiring&nbsp;a lockdown or need to shelter in place,&nbsp;the college&nbsp;has implemented a system referred to as&nbsp;ELKS or Emergency Lockdown Key System&nbsp;for doors requiring physical keys.&nbsp;<br>Red lock boxes&nbsp;have been installed&nbsp;in&nbsp;most&nbsp;offices or classrooms,&nbsp;like&nbsp;the images below. These boxes&nbsp;contain&nbsp;keys that may be used to lock an&nbsp;adjacent&nbsp;door during an emergency.&nbsp;Additionally, the door locks are&nbsp;labeled with an arrow and text that shows the direction the key must be turned to lock the door.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Make sure you&nbsp;always have your&nbsp;keys&nbsp;with you&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A campus alert (text, email, other) will&nbsp;notify you&nbsp;that we are going into lockdown&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When you receive a lockdown announcement, do not call for information. Prompt and detailed reporting can help prevent crimes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Suspicious behavior or activity can be any action that is out of place and does not fit into the usual day-to-day activity of our campus community.
