{"id":2075,"date":"2018-11-01T13:18:12","date_gmt":"2018-11-01T20:18:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/ratec\/?p=2075"},"modified":"2018-11-01T13:24:21","modified_gmt":"2018-11-01T20:24:21","slug":"what-is-interventional-radiology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/ratec\/2018\/11\/01\/what-is-interventional-radiology\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Interventional Radiology?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Interventional Radiology (IR)\u00a0is one of the most technologically advanced imaging specialties of medicine that has pioneered some of medicine\u2019s greatest advancements including angioplasty and stenting. In the past year interventional radiology has exponentially grown with minimally invasive image-guided\u00a0techniques.<\/p>\n<p>Interventional radiology is a highly specialized branch of radiology where\u00a0procedures are performed in an OR type\u00a0room (Angio Suite)\u00a0equipped with two C-Arms (Biplane) for visualization of the vessels (Angiography).\u00a0What\u2019s the difference between surgery and\u00a0IR procedures?\u00a0IR\u00a0procedures are performed making a small keyhole\u00a0incision in the femoral artery instead of opening up the patient and performing\u00a0traditional\u00a0surgery. This nonsurgical\u00a0technique\u00a0reduces the risk of infection and bleeding out, which allows the patient to recover faster and go home sooner.\u00a0\u00a0Wires and catheters are placed\u00a0through the tiny keyhole to\u00a0visualize and remodel\/fix the vessel. Through skilled manipulation of wires,\u00a0catheters and X-ray fluoroscopy the interventional radiologist is able to navigate all over the body. From the femoral artery patients can have their brain worked on (aneurysm stent or coiled)\u00a0or the very tip of their toe revascularized\u00a0due to disease.
