{"id":341,"date":"2025-07-29T14:38:56","date_gmt":"2025-07-29T21:38:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/rise-redesign-dev\/?page_id=341"},"modified":"2026-04-07T13:04:32","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T20:04:32","slug":"transcript-notation-service","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/rise\/faculty\/transcript-notation-service\/","title":{"rendered":"The RISE Transcript Notation Service"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-bc-sitka-spruce-narrow-content narrow-content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-mayflower-blocks-lead lead\"><strong>Students can earn a special\u00a0<strong>notation on their transcript<\/strong>, which can be meaningful to future employers and transfer institutions,\u00a0for taking a\u00a0course that incorporates <strong>Project-Based Learning (PBL), Service Learning, or Community-Engaged\/Civic Education (SL\/CECE).<\/strong><\/strong> Specific requirements must be met before instructors can add this notation to transcripts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Transcript notations affirm Bellevue College&#8217;s commitment that PBL, Service Learning, and CECE are useful teaching methodologies that help students apply course content, build transferable skills, and have meaningful learning experiences. The transcript notation provides official recognition that students actually had these experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before students can earn a transcript notation, the course must be reviewed and approved by a committee. Once approved, the instructor can indicate which students have met the requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Project-Based Learning (PBL) and the PBL Transcript Notation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Requirements<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To qualify, a PBL course must:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Include most of the characteristics of Project-Based Learning (not just &#8220;doing a project&#8217;). <br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pblworks.org\/doing-project-vs-project-based-learning\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.pblworks.org\/doing-project-vs-project-based-learning\">The following list<\/a> provides <strong>a full list of the differences between PBL and &#8220;doing a project.&#8221;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Integrate a group or individual project that produces a deliverable (e.g, a presentation, website, or work product).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Require students to present or share results with an audience beyond the classroom.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Require critical reflection (minimum of 2 reflections).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Key Notes<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A PBL course does not need to qualify for transcript notation, though instructors are encouraged to integrate PBL elements whenever possible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Not all PBL courses qualify. Committee approval is required, but once certified, a course may remain eligible for multiple quarters.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Instructors should <a href=\"mailto:rise@bellevuecollege.edu\"><strong>contact the RISE office<\/strong><\/a> if they need support to qualify for the transcript notation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper alignstandard\">\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper alignstandard\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Service-Learning &amp; Community-Engaged\/Civic Education<\/strong> (SL\/CECE)<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper alignstandard\">\n<p><em>Service-Learning <\/em>connects course content to volunteering with a local non-profit or government agency and critical reflection. <em>Community-Engaged &amp; Civic Education (CECE)<\/em> is a term adopted by Bellevue College in Fall 2020 to broaden the formats of community-based pedagogies supported by the RISE Learning Institute.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper alignstandard\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Requirements<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper alignstandard\">\n<p>To certify a course for the SL\/CECE transcript notation, a course must:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper alignstandard\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Integrate an SL\/CECE-related group or individual project into the course.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Require students to present or share work beyond the classroom.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Require critical reflection (at least 2 reflections).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper alignstandard\">\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper alignstandard\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Transcript Notation Review Process<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper alignstandard\">\n<p><strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-fall-maple-red-color\">For PBL Transcript Notations:<\/mark> <\/strong>At the beginning of the quarter, submit the following to <a href=\"mailto:rise@bellevuecollege.edu\">the RISE Learning Institute<\/a>:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper alignstandard\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Syllabus<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Relevant Reflections, Assignments, Activities, and Assessments<\/strong>&nbsp;(screen captures of Canvas assignments are fine)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>An explanation<\/strong> about how the course components possess the PBL criteria and fit into your overall course. (Include if you normally explain the PBL component in person to students).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper alignstandard\">\n<p><br><strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-fall-maple-red-color\">For SL\/CECE Transcript Notations:<\/mark><\/strong> Submit the following to the <a href=\"mailto:rise@bellevuecollege.edu\" data-type=\"mailto\" data-id=\"mailto:rise@bellevuecollege.edu\">RISE Learning Institute<\/a>:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper alignstandard\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Syllabus<\/strong> (with clear integration and explanation of Service Learning or CECE)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: initial\">Relevant assignmen<\/span>ts<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: initial\"><strong>Relevant reflections<\/strong><\/span>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"color: initial\">For in-person discussion reflections, the instructor should just send the proposed questions<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Any additional information<\/strong> about the SL\/CECE plans that would help guide the committee (e.g. anything you might tell the students that helps to build the connection between the CECE and the course content).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper alignstandard\">\n<p>A committee &#8212; composed of an administrator, a student, and faculty member &#8212; will review the materials.
