Post Prison Education Program

Varies. Please check website.

The mission of the Post Prison Education Program is to provide educational opportunities to prisoners and returnees in Washington State. Through our "Bridge to College" Program we work with people who have recently been released from prison, helping them transition successfully to college and the work force. We provide our students with these resources:

  • Scholarships
  • Academic advising and career counseling
  • Advocacy and mentoring

Our nontraditional scholarship fund can be used to remove any financial barriers to education and employment (e.g., tuition, textbooks, required school supplies, testing fees, rent, bus passes). Normally, scholarship funds are used to supplement a student's financial aid package, so that the student has sufficient resources to excel in school. Scholarship amounts are awarded on a case by case basis, and are dependent on the financial need of the individual.

In order to be eligible for our Program applicants must:

  • be residents of Washington state
  • be prisoners, or formerly prisoners
  • be low income
  • demonstrate that they have the life skills necessary to succeed at school and work
  • demonstrate that they are ready to make school their first priority, and work hard to achieve their academic goals
  • Enroll in an accredited public college or university in Washington State

Enrollment Process:

  • Prospective students must complete our Application and write a Personal
  • Essay describing their educational goals and personal history
  • Transcripts must be provided upon request.
  • After the Application and Essay are reviewed prospective students meet with representatives of our Scholarship Review Committee.
  • After the intake interview, applicants are informed if they have been accepted into the program.

In order to remain enrolled in our program, students must:

  • Apply for federal financial aid or other scholarships as appropriate
  • Work part time, if possible
