About Earth Week 2021<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Office of Sustainability is holding the 22nd annual Earth Week \u2013 a week of exciting sustainability and climate justice related activities at Bellevue College!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The theme this year is “The Future is Now”, which centers the urgency and need for climate action to secure a just and fair future for all, as well as innovative ideas and concepts to get us there. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Due to Bellevue College’s COVID-19 response, this event will be virtual, with a few contactless pickup options available for some events. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Impact of our Food Waste and Clever Ways to Reduce It with Anya Guyton<\/td>Did you know that strawberry tops don\u2019t have to be wasted? You can use them in many ways, like to put in a smoothie, to make a strawberry compote, or to just eat them plain! This session will cover more unique ideas like these where we can use our food scraps and peels to make the most of the food we buy. The effects of our food waste on the Earth will be addressed, as well as the sustainable ways to minimize our impact. If you are curious about food waste or just want some cool recipe ideas, this session is for you!

United by Water Film Showing followed by Q&A with Director Derrick Lamere<\/td>Join Film Director Derrick Lamere for a showing of \u201cUnited By Water\u201d, followed by a Q&A session with Derrick after the film.

\n United by Water<\/a> documents the inspiring journey of local tribal communities to Kettle Falls, the fishing site of their ancestors, for the first time in 80 years. Narrated by Sherman Alexie, it is a film about reconnecting with tribal traditions and with the river that once was so integral to their way of life.
\n
\nDirector Statement-Derrick LaMere: “When I started production on United by Water, I wanted to document the experiences of my people (Colville) as they reintroduce themselves to our ancestral waterways on the Columbia. Every day I worked with the canoes and their makers, I became more and more inspired to share the stories of these people. After sharing the project with Upper Columbia United Tribes, I was able to dig deep and tell a portion of our history I feel is left out of the history books of the general public. With the guidance and voice of Native American Poet and Author Sherman Alexie, we as a group were able to tell the unique story of the tribes of the Upper Columbia.”

Repair What You Wear Workshop<\/td>Mending clothes is climate action! Learn how to repair your own clothes and keep them out of the landfill with Repair What You Wear’s founder Ros Studd. Repair What You Wear is a unique, free platform for resources on clothing mending skills. Ros worked in the clothing industry then as a textiles\/fashion tutor but saw that core mending skills were being lost and leading to a significant financial and environmental cost. During this workshop you\u2019ll learn key textile mending techniques and tips, resources available on the Repair What You Wear’s website, and the environmental and economic impacts of clothing.

\nTerraCycle\u00ae is a social enterprise Eliminating the Idea of Waste\u00ae. In 21 countries, they tackle the issue from many angles. Nearly everything we touch can be recycled and they collect typically non-recyclable items through national, first-of-their-kind recycling platforms.

Blood and Oil Documentary with Q&A and Discussion by Abdulmajid of the Arabic Culture Student Associaton<\/td>How did the Western world become so engaged in the Middle East? Why did the Ottoman Empire \u2013 now known as the Middle East \u2013 become involved with World War I which was a European affair? The documentary film \u201cBlood and Oil<\/a> \u2013 The Middle East in World War I\u201d follows conflict from the Ottoman Empire\u2019s entry into the Great War in October 1914, to the Allied victory and declaration of the new Turkish Republic in 1923, and the hostilities that have plagued the region since. This film is sponsored by the Arab Culture Student Association in collaboration as part of Earth Week.

Tree Giveaway with local non-profit 300 Trees<\/td>300 Trees is distributing 50 native trees to the Bellevue College community in celebration of Earth Day.

\nThese trees are meant to be planted outside and add to our Urban Tree Canopy.

\nBC students, staff, or faculty interested in a free tree need to register for a tree in advance<\/a> using their BC email address

Repair What You Wear Workshop<\/td>Mending clothes is climate action! Learn how to repair your own clothes and keep them out of the landfill with Repair What You Wear’s founder Ros Studd. Repair What You Wear is a unique, free platform for resources on clothing mending skills. Ros worked in the clothing industry then as a textiles\/fashion tutor but saw that core mending skills were being lost and leading to a significant financial and environmental cost. During this workshop you\u2019ll learn key textile mending techniques and tips, resources available on the Repair What You Wear’s website, and the environmental and economic impacts of clothing.

Take Recycling to the Next Level! <\/td>Join Caroline Coffee from TerraCycle <\/a> for a lunchtime chat about the innovative ways Terracycle recycles waste and ways you can take action to reduce your environmental impact on and off campus.

\nTerraCycle\u00ae is a social enterprise Eliminating the Idea of Waste\u00ae. In 21 countries, they tackle the issue from many angles. Nearly everything we touch can be recycled and they collect typically non-recyclable items through national, first-of-their-kind recycling platforms.

\nTerraCycle works on issues such as ocean plastics and works to turn it into new products! Check out this talk to learn more!

Blood and Oil Documentary with Q&A and Discussion by Abdulmajid of the Arabic Culture Student Associaton<\/td>How did the Western world become so engaged in the Middle East? Why did the Ottoman Empire \u2013 now known as the Middle East \u2013 become involved with World War I which was a European affair? The documentary film \u201cBlood and Oil<\/a> \u2013 The Middle East in World War I\u201d follows conflict from the Ottoman Empire\u2019s entry into the Great War in October 1914, to the Allied victory and declaration of the new Turkish Republic in 1923, and the hostilities that have plagued the region since. This film is sponsored by the Arab Culture Student Association in collaboration as part of Earth Week.

\nEnjoy the film any time (run time 1 hour 52 minutes), about conflicts for middle eastern oil. Then join a short discussion with the Arabic Culture Student Association at 3:30 pm.

Tree Giveaway with local non-profit 300 Trees<\/td>300 Trees is distributing 50 native trees to the Bellevue College community in celebration of Earth Day.

\nThese trees are meant to be planted outside and add to our Urban Tree Canopy.

\nBC students, staff, or faculty interested in a free tree need to register for a tree in advance<\/a> using their BC email address

Participants will learn about container gardening, growing fresh herbs, veggies, and flowers from your window sill or patio, and organic gardening practices. Learn about the different types of seeds through seed trivia, how to garden without soil (wow!), and check out some of our campus expert’s home gardens. Everyone is welcome to join the workshop (Up to 100 participants)!

\nStudents only: Get seeds and soil mailed to you! Register by April 12 for the “Spring Garden Starter Kit”<\/a> , which includes seeds and soil. Supply your own container, such as a clean yogurt container or a water bottle with the top cut off and you’ll have everything you need to start your garden! *Limited to 25 participants, registration closes April 12*

Wellness Center Earth Week Bike Ride<\/td>Bike Rental\/Helmets Available (9 bikes available)

\nJoin the BC Wellness Center and others for a group ride along the Palouse to Cascade Trail. Participants will sign up online and meet at the trailhead. Bikes\/helmets available for, or you can bring your own. The ride will follow the gravel double track trail for great Cascade views and fresh air for a 6-10 mile out and back trip. Use this as planning for more rides or backpacking trips this summer.
