Throughout the 2015-2016 school-year, Sustainability at Bellevue College builds its biking community with educational programs and new facilities.<\/p>\n

Cycling programs and infrastructure are necessary tools for a commuter campus. Everyday Bellevue College sees over 3,000 students and staff pass through its roads and parking lots. The congestion, delays, and carbon footprint caused by thousands of cars places a burden on the community and environment.<\/p>\n

Cycling presents a low-impact opportunity for accessing campus and surrounding neighborhoods; however, supporting bike-commuting means cyclists must weigh-in on their opinion. Through a Spring Quarter 2015 survey, student and faculty cyclists submitted ideas for advancing bicycle commuting on campus. They noted a desire to feel safe on their ride to and through campus. A sense of \u201cbike-friendliness\u201d became clear, and a desire to learn more about bicycle maintenance skills.<\/p>\n

The Office of Sustainability at Bellevue College heard them loud and clear. Through partnerships with community organizations, campus departments, and student leaders, Bellevue College plans to advance cycling efforts throughout the 2015-2016 school-year.<\/p>\n

Notably, Bellevue College has partnered with Bike Works, a Seattle-based non-profit, to offer bike-oriented programs. Here\u2019s what to look for this Fall Quarter.<\/p>\n

October 13th<\/sup>: Bike Mobile on Campus.<\/strong> During Spirit Week, bring your bike and have Bike Works perform basic maintenance. Get it ready for winter weather, or just spruce it up!\u00a0C Building Courtyard (11-3 PM)<\/em><\/p>\n

October 14th<\/sup>: Bike Commuting Class, C 130, 12:30-1:20.<\/strong> A 50 minute class covering laws and rules of the road, staying dry, how to carry your gear, tools necessary, and navigating your bike on transit. This class introduces cyclists to lessons needed for entering the world of cycling.<\/p>\n

October 21st<\/sup>: Fix a Flat,\u00a0C 130, 12:30-1:20.<\/strong>\u00a0A 50 minute class that covers a basic, but necessary skill for getting from home to campus. Participants will receive hands on practice on changing their tubes and fixing a flat.<\/p>\n

November 4th<\/sup>: Basic Brakes Class, C 130, 12:30-1:20. <\/strong>A 50 minute class will cover 3 different types of brakes and their common issues.<\/p>\n

Also, be on the look-out for improved facilities, such as lockable and covered bike parking, access to showers, bike lanes, signage, and way-finding.<\/p>\n

In concert with educational programs, infrastructure, and community building, Bellevue College can improve the safety and \u201cbike-friendliness,\u201d creating an inviting place for bike-commuting.<\/p>\n
