Hello BC!<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Two weeks ago Bellevue College\u2019s Office of Sustainability successfully hosted our 18th<\/sup> annual Earth Week event!<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Even the weather reflected the current social climate as Wednesday determinedly conformed to the popular stereotype of April Showers, while Friday challenged popular belief and gave us beautiful sunshine to end our week on a high note. This sun could not have picked a better time to come out, as we hosted a combined work party on Friday, encompassing the BioSwale, Beekeeping Society, and Garden Club. The volunteer effort shown this year during Friday\u2019s work party was tremendous. Not only did the Bellevue College community wholeheartedly embrace Earth Week\u2019s theme of \u201cRise Up. Be the Change,\u201d<\/strong> we rose up and were the<\/strong> change <\/strong>and accomplished some awesome goals:<\/p>\n

*BioSwale: a storm water management feature very similar to a rain garden.<\/p>\n

\"Screen<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

One year ago, the BioSwale Project transitioned from paper to reality due to a dedicated team of students, staff, and faculty volunteers. Here we are tabling at Earth Week 2016 with the Beekeeping Society after receiving our funding from the Student Environment and Sustainability Fund (SESF).<\/p>\n

\"Screen<\/p>\n

All of the work done on these projects has been done by student, staff, and faculty volunteers. Earth Week 2016\u2019s BioSwale work party lasted the entire week and had a total of 32 volunteers.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Earth Week 2017\u2019s work party encompassed three separate events in one day, with a total of 61 volunteers just at the BioSwale!<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

That means 93 people have lent their time and effort to helping BC become more sustainable in the future as the BioSwale is a project that will take another 5 – 10 years before becoming well established and fully functional.<\/p>\n

I had the honor of working on this project from the very beginning with an amazing group of people, many of whom I met in my first quarter at BC. As I write this, I\u2019m a quarter away from graduating, and I could not be more proud of where we\u2019ve come.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, at the greenhouse\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Garden Club restored their beds with fresh compost from Cedar Grove:<\/p>\n

The Beekeeping Society painted their bee boxes in a rainbow of springtime colors and prepared for the arrival of the bees.<\/p>\n
