Our hope is that you will join us in taking the Earth Week <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Turn Off\u00a0 Your Printers<\/span><\/strong> challenge and <em>\u201cthink before you print\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Did you know?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It is estimated that if all 717+ desktop printers are left on 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, the college wastes approximately $4,000 a year in electricity costs alone \u2013 just while the printers sleep.<\/p>\n<p><em>What can I do?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>You can turn off your printer until you need to use it. Even in resting or sleep mode printers draw electricity. This week \u2013 try to go without your desktop printer!\u00a0 Use a networked printer if you can, send larger jobs to the copy center.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tuesday \u2013 save paper \u2013 save money<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Did you know?<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Students print approximately 3,000,000 pages per year in the N250 Open Lab alone<\/li>\n<li>The copy center went through 4,550,000 sheets of paper in the past 12 months<\/li>\n<li>The college buys approximately 4,400,000 pages of paper per year for its desktop printers, fax machines, and satellite copiers (excluding N250 Open Lab and the copy center)<\/li>\n<li>Taken together, this means the college prints approximately <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">12,000,000<\/span> pages per year<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>What can I do?<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You can post handouts to the portal and encourage students not to print unless absolutely necessary<\/li>\n<li>You can plan ahead and create packets for your classes that students purchase at the beginning of the quarter from the bookstore<\/li>\n<li>You can think twice before printing an email<\/li>\n<li>Print meeting materials double sided \u2013 better yet project information in meeting rooms with projector systems<\/li>\n<li>Print on white paper \u2013 not colored paper \u2013 it\u2019s cheaper!<\/li>\n<li>Sign up at My BC and commit to the Great BC Paper Chase Pledge bellevuecollege.edu\/eac\/paperpledge.html<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Wednesday \u2013 save toner \u2013 save money<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Did you know?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Inkjet printers seem cheaper \u2013 but the toner really adds up. About 20% of the printers on campus \u2013 around 140 units \u2013 are inkjets. Every page printed on an inkjet cost four times what it costs to print on a laser jet! If we eliminated inkjets we could save around $30,000 a year!<\/p>\n<p><em>What can I do?<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Don\u2019t buy any more inkjet printers. Work with people in your area and pool money to get a networked printer<\/li>\n<li>Ask Computing Services to give you some free consultation and how you can be a better steward of college resources \u2013 while maintaining efficiency and convenience<\/li>\n<li>Think before you print<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Thursday \u2013 save time \u2013 save money<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Did you know?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Computing Services spend hours every week fixing printers \u2013 and the cheaper the printer the more frequently it seems to need to be fixed!<\/p>\n<p><em>What can I do?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Talk to your unit or others in your immediate vicinity about getting one networked laser printer.
