{"id":14911,"date":"2018-12-17T12:50:27","date_gmt":"2018-12-17T20:50:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/sustainability\/?p=14911"},"modified":"2021-01-08T15:09:41","modified_gmt":"2021-01-08T23:09:41","slug":"holiday-sustainability-tips","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/sustainability\/2018\/12\/17\/holiday-sustainability-tips\/","title":{"rendered":"Holiday Sustainability Tips!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Happy Holidays from all of us at the Office of Sustainability! <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here are some helpful tips for having a green holiday season this year (and also some gift ideas)!<\/p>\n<p><strong>What should I do with my real wreath when I\u2019m done with it? <\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Reuse the wire! <\/strong>Real wreaths are held together using wire, which you are able to unwind from the wreath frame. Put it around a spool to use for craft projects or making next year\u2019s wreath<\/li>\n<li><strong>Recycle the metal frame! <\/strong>If the wreath frame is uncoated, it can go right into the recycling bin.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Compost the branches! <\/strong>Any real plant can be composted, including wreath branches.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Or if you want the easy way to be sustainable\u2026 <\/strong>Bring it to the BC Grounds Shop (M Building) between January 7<sup>th<\/sup>-11<sup>th<\/sup>, 9:30 am to 11:30 am to have your wreath composted and recycled right here on campus!<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14916 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2018\/12\/kjk-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"wreath\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2018\/12\/kjk-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2018\/12\/kjk-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2018\/12\/kjk-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2018\/12\/kjk-55x55.jpg 55w, https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2018\/12\/kjk-45x45.jpg 45w, https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2018\/12\/kjk-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2018\/12\/kjk.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>What should I do with my old artificial tree and wreath? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If your artificial tree or wreath is about ready to move on, we know exactly what you can do! Fake trees and wreaths cannot be recycled, but there are ways to keep them out of the landfill by re-purposing it the right way.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Donate your tree or wreath!<\/strong> Find a non-profit organization or local business that would love to use the tree during the holiday season.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14915 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2018\/12\/jkjn-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"tree\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2018\/12\/jkjn-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2018\/12\/jkjn.jpg 565w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>What should I do with my old holiday lights? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When your lights just don\u2019t seem to work like they used to, don\u2019t throw them in the trash\u2026recycle them through a designated facility! And remember\u2026choose LED for long lasting and energy efficient lights that are environmentally responsible and won\u2019t jack up your energy bill.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Mail them<\/strong>: You can mail in your lights using mailing programs such as\u2026\n<ul>\n<li>Christmas Light Source:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christmas-light-source.com\/Christmas-Lights-Recycling-Program_c_210.html\">https:\/\/www.christmas-light-source.com\/Christmas-Lights-Recycling-Program_c_210.html<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Holiday LED:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.holidayleds.com\/christmas-light-recycling-program.aspx\">https:\/\/www.holidayleds.com\/christmas-light-recycling-program.aspx<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-14918 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2018\/12\/cls-recycle-program.png\" alt=\"infographic\" width=\"594\" height=\"653\"><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Drop them off: <\/strong>You can drop off your lights with Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium partnering with Girl Scouts of Western Washington from now through January 12<sup>th<\/sup>! Check out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdza.org\/event\/zoolights\/\">https:\/\/www.pdza.org\/event\/zoolights\/<\/a> and scroll to the bottom of the page to select \u201cRecycle your Lights\u201d for instructions and additional drop off locations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What should I use to wrap my presents? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Buying new wrapping paper that just gets thrown away as soon as a gift is opened, means it ends up in the landfill! Regular wrapping paper isn\u2019t always recyclable, so re-purpose materials or use something reusable that can wrap presents year after year! Here are some great alternatives:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Newspaper and paper bags<\/li>\n<li>Old maps and calendars<\/li>\n<li>Fabric<\/li>\n<li>Reusable gift bags<\/li>\n<li>Recycled paper gift wrap<\/li>\n<li>Old comic books (make sure they aren\u2019t worth anything!)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-14914 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2018\/12\/jhbkujnk.jpg\" alt=\"comic paper\" width=\"216\" height=\"324\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2018\/12\/jhbkujnk.jpg 419w, https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2018\/12\/jhbkujnk-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 216px) 100vw, 216px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>I am looking for sustainable gifts! <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are plenty of really cool gifts that are unique, environmentally and socially responsible. Check out some of the Office of Sustainability\u2019s favorite ideas.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Jewelry made out of recycled auto glass!<\/strong> There are many different kinds of re-purposed jewelry, one of them being jewelry made out of glass from car break-ins. What a great way to take a bad situation and turn it into art!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reusable food wrap! <\/strong>Instead of using plastic bags and plastic wrap to store lunch and seal meals, give the gift of reusable storage! The reusable bags you\u2019ll find are made with beeswax and can be washed and reused.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reusable metal or glass straws!<\/strong> Plastic straws end up in the landfill or the environment and pose a very big problem for wildlife, especially marine creatures. Give the gift of a reusable straw to help minimize the environmental impact on our sea life!
