{"id":1919,"date":"2012-03-22T13:58:04","date_gmt":"2012-03-22T20:58:04","guid":{"rendered":"\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/sustainability\/?p=1919"},"modified":"2014-03-07T16:40:31","modified_gmt":"2014-03-08T00:40:31","slug":"a-bright-idea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/sustainability\/2012\/03\/22\/a-bright-idea\/","title":{"rendered":"A Bright Idea"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bellevue College Student Sustainability Coordinators\u00a0visited offices around campus and\u00a0replaced about 70 old, energy-intensive incandescent light bulbs in desk lamps with new, state-of-the -art LEDs.\u00a0 Everybody\u2019s familiar with Edison\u2019s old incandescent which have been around for 133 years but many people are in the dark (HDHH) about LEDs which are basically a computer chip that puts out light much more efficiently than the older bulbs.<\/p>\n<p>The bulbs were received for\u00a0free from Puget Sound Energy as part of a their commercial\u00a0rebate program. They are the TCP company\u2019s LED8E26A1930K, lights that you can\u2019t find on the company\u2019s website but are available elsewhere on the web.\u00a0They are pricey but since this is similar to computer technology Moore\u2019s Law will take over making them cheaper &amp; more efficient over time; it is inevitable that this technology will be the lighting wave of the future. Despite the high, initial investment the potential energy <strong>savings of these bulbs is almost $160 over their lifetime<\/strong> &amp; the bulb pays for itself in a little over a year so it really is a wise investment.<\/p>\n<p>Surprisingly there was very little resistance to the new bulbs.\u00a0 The vast majority of people\u00a0who\u00a0saw the new lights were pleased with the light\u00a0and happy to save the college energy by using them.
