{"id":4223,"date":"2013-01-28T12:50:19","date_gmt":"2013-01-28T20:50:19","guid":{"rendered":"\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/sustainability\/?p=4223"},"modified":"2013-11-19T13:50:45","modified_gmt":"2013-11-19T21:50:45","slug":"4223","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/sustainability\/2013\/01\/28\/4223\/","title":{"rendered":"Input for Earth Week &#8211; April 22-26, 2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"center\"><strong>POST BY ROBERT VIENS<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em>&#8220;The time has come,&#8221; the Walrus said,<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em>\u00a0&#8220;to talk of many things:<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em>Of \u00a0windmills&#8211;politics&#8211;and toxic waste<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em>Of radishes&#8211;and salmon known as kings&#8211;<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em>And why the sea is getting hot&#8211;<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em>And what the future brings.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>BC Earth Week is coming up April 22-26<\/strong>\u00a0and planning is underway. \u00a0I\u2019ll keep this short, but we always like to send out a request in January for suggestions and volunteers.<\/p>\n<p>The tentative theme for the <strong>14th annual Earth Week Celebration<\/strong> is <strong>\u201cLiving in a Changing Climate\u201d<\/strong>. \u00a0Yes\u2013 we have never used this theme before, so we thought it was time to talk about climate.**<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019d like to emphasize issues around climate change<strong> ranging from science of climate to the social justice impacts and economic ramifications<\/strong>. In addition, it is always important for us to tie into as many disciplines as possible \u2013 so we encourage ideas relating to the arts, activism, philosophy, journalism, religion, business, health care, etc. &#8230;there is really no limit to the possibilities.<\/p>\n<p>Please let me know if you:<br \/> (1) would like to participate by giving a lecture (BC faculty and staff are always the heart of our program);<\/p>\n<p>(2) have an idea for a speaker or event you\u2019d be interested in (it\u2019s great if you have a potential connection, but general ideas are good, too);<\/p>\n<p>(3) would like to have your students, club, program, department, student organization, etc. participate;<\/p>\n<p>(4) would like to bring a class to a lecture (let me know the class name and time if you know yet);<\/p>\n<p>(5) would like to be more involved in the general planning for the event;<\/p>\n<p>(6) want to be a all-around friend to Earth Week<em>\u2026membership includes a healthy an equitable future.<\/em><br \/> I hope that we can establish some connections with classes and clubs that may not have been involved in Earth Week in the past. \u00a0If you have students working on projects (in-class or service learning) related to sustainability (I know there are lot of you who do) please feel free to think of ways they may be involved (displaying final projects, serving on a panel, etc.) Just let me know.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2013\/01\/hand-print-for-Earth-Week.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-4278 img-fluid \" alt=\"Green hand print\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2013\/01\/hand-print-for-Earth-Week-150x150.gif\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2013\/01\/hand-print-for-Earth-Week-150x150.gif 150w, https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2013\/01\/hand-print-for-Earth-Week-55x55.gif 55w, https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2013\/01\/hand-print-for-Earth-Week-45x45.gif 45w, https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2013\/01\/hand-print-for-Earth-Week-100x100.gif 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>The sky is the limit \u2013 no idea is to big or to small! \u00a0As always we\u2019d like to incorporate many different parts of the campus in the week\u2019s events, so we are open to discussing any possibilities.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks!<br \/> Rob<\/p>\n<p>PS \u2013 For a peek at what has happened over the past 13 years, see the Earth Week History Page at &lt;<a href=\"http:\/\/scidiv.bellevuecollege.edu\/rv\/earthweek\/history.php\">http:\/\/scidiv.bellevuecollege.edu\/rv\/earthweek\/history.php<\/a>&gt;.<\/p>\n<p>PSS \u2013 The ASG will be holding their annual BBQ on Thursday of Earth Week. \u00a0So we will not schedule much that Thursday (25th). \u00a0They are planning to incorporate sustainability into the event.<\/p>\n<p>-**FYI \u2013 BC Meteorology Instructor Kent Short writes up an annual, short &#8220;global warming update&#8221;. \u00a0Here is what he sent to the Science Division last week regarding 2012:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\u00a0<strong>Global Warming Update<\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>January 2013<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0According to NOAA, the global average air temperature for 2012 ranked as the 10<sup>th<\/sup> warmest year since records have been kept. Including 2012, all 12 years to date in the 21<sup>st<\/sup> century rank among the 14 warmest years on record. Only one year during the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century \u2013 1998 \u2013 was warmer than 2012. For the contiguous United States, 2012 was the warmest year in the 1895-2012 period of record, averaging 3.5\u00baF warmer than the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century average, and breaking the previous record year (1998) by 1.0\u00baF. The State of Washington was the only state in the lower 48 that did not have at least one station record its warmest year ever. There were eleven $1 billion+ weather disasters in the U.S. in 2012, making it second only to 2011, which had 14.
