the &#8220;treats&#8221; were homemade cookies, popcorn balls, and maybe some store-bought candy like lollipops when you were lucky.\u00a0 When I was a girl I always wanted those store-bought costumes or candies because they were the exception to the rule&#8230; not anymore.<\/p>\n<p>Halloween has become a top American consumer holiday in the last three decades; the National Retail Federation just posted an article (<a title=\"NRF Halloween spending in 2013\" href=\"https:\/\/nrf.com\/media\/press-releases\/ghouls-and-ghosts-galore-158-million-people-celebrate-halloween-this-year\" target=\"_blank\">Ghouls and Ghosts Galore, 158 Million People to Celebrate Halloween This Year, According to NRF<\/a>)\u00a0about the expected consumer spending on Halloween\u00a0for 2013.\u00a0 &#8220;with the average celebrant expected to spend $75.03 on d\u00e9cor, costumes, candy and fun&#8230; Overall, average spending on Halloween has increased 54.7 percent since 2005, with total spending estimated to reach $6.9 billion in 2013.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Over $6.9 BILLION is spent on Halloween now?\u00a0 Is this really the way our holidays have become&#8230; entirely store-bought consumer-driven operations with nothing being handmade, homemade or sustainable???<\/p>\n<p>Well this isn&#8217;t how I think Halloween has to be&#8230;\u00a0and there are\u00a0ways that\u00a0YOU CAN HELP!<\/p>\n<p>Yes, we all want to celebrate Halloween with unique costumes, great decorations and yummy food and we all can do this while being more environmentally conscious.\u00a0 Lets take the three biggest ways money is spent and waste is generated for Halloween&#8230; Candy, Costumes and Decorations, and let&#8217;s turn the Halloween cycle back to one that is homemade-with-love and sustainable-for-a-reason this month!<\/p>\n<p>First, <strong>Candy<\/strong>&#8230; with all the candy that is sold by the Super-Size-Me packages at every store from the grocery stores to the local pharmacy to even your neighborhood convenience store&#8230; here are some options for a more sustainable candy option.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2013\/10\/Candy-Corn-rice-crispy-treats.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6893 alignleft img-fluid \" src=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2013\/10\/Candy-Corn-rice-crispy-treats.jpg\" alt=\"Candy Corn rice crispy treats\" width=\"198\" height=\"248\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2013\/10\/Candy-Corn-rice-crispy-treats.jpg 330w, https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2013\/10\/Candy-Corn-rice-crispy-treats-240x300.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 198px) 100vw, 198px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Store bought packages of candy&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>-instead try-<\/strong>\u00a0 making cupcakes, cookies or candy for home parties<\/li>\n<li><strong>-instead try-<\/strong>\u00a0 buying\u00a0treats made by\u00a0local businesses!<\/li>\n<li><strong>-instead try-<\/strong>\u00a0 buying or printing off paper coupons\u00a0from local restaurants\/stores (avoid plastic gift cards)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Second, <strong>Costumes<\/strong>&#8230; there are now a myriad of places to purchase costumes from online to almost any retail store that sells fashion&#8230; here are some better options for making a unique and wonderful costume instead this Halloween!<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2013\/10\/upcycled-umbrella-bat-halloween-costume.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-6894 img-fluid \" src=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2013\/10\/upcycled-umbrella-bat-halloween-costume.jpg\" alt=\"upcycled umbrella bat halloween costume\" width=\"276\" height=\"216\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2013\/10\/upcycled-umbrella-bat-halloween-costume.jpg 460w, https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2013\/10\/upcycled-umbrella-bat-halloween-costume-300x235.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 276px) 100vw, 276px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>-instead try-<\/strong>\u00a0 shopping your local thrift store, and reusing already made\/bought costumes so that they have multiple life cycles!\u00a0 Besides, thrift stores often support nonprofits and give back to the communities around you AND they often have wonderful and unique ideas for creating a costume that are specialized to fit\u00a0YOUR PERSONALITY!\u00a0 Don&#8217;t be the 13th Zombie at the party&#8230; stand out in your own way!<\/p>\n<p><strong>-instead try-\u00a0<\/strong> making your own costume!\u00a0 Try purchasing crafty and artistic-based costumes or accessories for your costumes from local artisans on places like Etsy.com.\u00a0 Just give yourself some time to create your masterpiece, buy the items or find them in the thrift stores or on <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><a title=\"Etsy Halloween\" href=\"http:\/\/www.etsy.com\/search\/handmade\/holidays\/halloween?search_submit=&amp;hp_ref=primary&amp;q=halloween&amp;order=most_relevant&amp;view_type=gallery&amp;ship_to=US\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Etsy.com<\/span><\/a><\/span> and try using as many pieces of your costume that are upcycled and\/or can be recycled afterwards!<\/p>\n<p>Third, <strong>Decorations<\/strong>. \u00a0I know, I know&#8230;
