{"id":7037,"date":"2010-05-27T21:50:45","date_gmt":"2010-05-28T04:50:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bcsustainability.wordpress.com\/?p=22"},"modified":"2014-03-07T16:42:24","modified_gmt":"2014-03-08T00:42:24","slug":"bikes-are-beautiful","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/sustainability\/2010\/05\/27\/bikes-are-beautiful\/","title":{"rendered":"Bikes are\u00a0Beautiful"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The bike is an efficient invention.\u00a0With it, I can integrate my task list.\u00a0 Dropping my daughter off at preschool is the same thing as getting a work out.\u00a0\u00a0Going to work is exercise.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t have to schedule time for each task, they are automatically integrated.<\/p>\n<p>When I bike\u00a0I stimulate\u00a0my blood flow which excites my brain, fuels new ideas, and thus en-livens me to work the\u00a0tasks at hand.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brainrules.net\/exercise\">It is a fact that humans think better when they move.<\/a> \u00a0It is a commute that wakes me, readies me and invigorates me.<\/p>\n<p>Bikes are also energy efficient.\u00a0 The food I eat, powers the many aspects of myself; my thoughts, my feelings, my\u00a0words, my fingers and\u00a0\u00a0my legs which power my bike.\u00a0 It is a\u00a0functioning \u00a0process and beautiful in its efficiency\u00a0and multitude.\u00a0 Compare that to a car, whose sole purpose is to propel people from one spot to another and yet <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/lang\/eng\/amory_lovins_on_winning_the_oil_endgame.html\">87% of the fuel put into the car \u00a0is wasted<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Biking is also clean.\u00a0 I take joy thinking that I have had a carbon-lite day when I choose my bike over the car.\u00a0 With my choice I have, in a small way, slowed the rate of carbon emitted into the atmosphere and frankly, I&#8217;m proud of that choice.<\/p>\n<p>There is no better place for my personal health than outside, even in urban areas.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.epa.gov\/iaq\/\">Indoor air quality is 2-100 times more polluted than the outdoors and we spend 90% of our time inside.<\/a>\u00a0 As I bike, I know my lungs, heart, head, skin are in the healthiest place, not trapped in a box with\u00a0 pollutants and chemicals.<\/p>\n<p>Cyclists are happy.\u00a0 We cheerfully greet each other as we cross paths.\u00a0 Strangers that would usually never speak share a common bond instantly as we\u00a0cycle together to our\u00a0various destinations and lives.\u00a0\u00a0 I often catch myself\u00a0smiling\u00a0as I bike,\u00a0swept up in the moment of the pure freedom, the feel of the wind and\u00a0the closeness to the world.<\/p>\n<p>It is a human truth that we are made to move, from our hunter and gathering ancestry to our collective thirst for international travel now, humans want to go.\u00a0 To me, it is all the more satisfying\u00a0when\u00a0I do it with my own legs.<\/p>\n<p><em>By Marika Reinke<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The bike is an efficient invention.\u00a0With it, I can integrate my task list.\u00a0 Dropping my daughter off at preschool is the same thing as getting a work out.\u00a0\u00a0Going to work is exercise.\u00a0 I don't have to schedule time for each task, they are automatically integrated.
