{"id":7612,"date":"2013-12-03T09:17:08","date_gmt":"2013-12-03T17:17:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/sustainability\/?p=7612"},"modified":"2014-01-14T12:42:03","modified_gmt":"2014-01-14T20:42:03","slug":"survey-says-faculty-teach-sustainability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/sustainability\/2013\/12\/03\/survey-says-faculty-teach-sustainability\/","title":{"rendered":"Survey Says: Faculty Teach Sustainability"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The results are in, faculty members teach sustainability!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Most Faculty Interested in Teaching or Already Teaching Sustainability Concepts, in all Academic Divisions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In Spring and Fall of 2013 Sustainability at Bellevue College surveyed faculty about the use of sustainability concepts in curriculum across campus.\u00a0 Of the <b>198<\/b> who responded to the survey which included an incentive to participate, <b>52%<\/b> reported that they integrate sustainability into their curriculum.<\/p>\n<p>First, a big thank you to faculty members who have chosen to incorporate sustainability in their courses!<\/p>\n<p>Second, for those interested in incorporating sustainability into their curriculum, the Faculty Commons offers the \u201cIntegrating Sustainability in your Course\u201d\u00a0Workshop, which provides faculty with stipends to adapt syllabi with sustainability topics and methods.<\/p>\n<p>All divisions feature courses that integrate sustainability in the curriculum, so a large variety of courses create new opportunities and contexts for students to learn skills and applications.\u00a0 From Accounting to World Languages, faculty members integrate sustainability concepts into their curriculum.<\/p>\n<p><b>Challenges to Integrating Sustainability<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Of the 33% who don\u2019t incorporate sustainability, <b>16%<\/b> feels that it is \u201cinfeasible to incorporate sustainability\u201d in the curriculum.\u00a0 The survey allows faculty to indicate why they do not incorporate sustainability at this time.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>59% state that \u201cSustainability is not a course outcome\u201d<\/li>\n<li>7% say that there\u2019s \u201cno room in the course\u201d<\/li>\n<li>3% indicate that they \u201cdo not have time to develop lessons\u201d<\/li>\n<li>31% chose \u201cother\u201d and indicated such reasons as \u201cUnsure how to incorporate it into lessons\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Divisions Integrate Sustainability<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Each division integrates sustainability to different degrees.\u00a0 The following charts demonstrate the percentage of sustainability courses by division and note whether those not integrating it are \u201cinterested in incorporating sustainability\u201d or believe it is \u201cnot feasible\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The results are in, faculty members teach sustainability!
