{"id":9329,"date":"2014-03-17T13:57:33","date_gmt":"2014-03-17T20:57:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/sustainability\/?p=9329"},"modified":"2014-04-08T14:56:22","modified_gmt":"2014-04-08T21:56:22","slug":"are-zombies-sustainable","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/sustainability\/2014\/03\/17\/are-zombies-sustainable\/","title":{"rendered":"Are Zombies Sustainable?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Most of us have seen Zombies popping up everywhere lately&#8230; in movies, TV shows and even football half-time Thriller dance mobs. \u00a0It seems no matter where we turn, Zombies are on our minds.<\/p>\n<p>But can Zombies teach us to be sustainable? \u00a0Well apparently they can and the upcoming class <a title=\"Zombie Apocalypse Bellevue College class\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/classes\/Search?quarter=Spring2014&amp;searchterm=0610\" target=\"_blank\">INTER 135 How to Survive the Coming Zombie Apocalypse<\/a>\u00a0helps show how &#8220;leading lives that are both more sustainable and more fulfilling&#8221; is where we need to be headed to survive.<\/p>\n<p>One of the course instructors, Elizabeth Harazim, described the course as the ethics bridge between equity and environment. \u00a0Basically, to imagine your life in a real live disaster movie then think about how you are going to survive and get your basic needs met. \u00a0From there it is only a short step to our modern society and who has resources, how they got them or more importantly, what they do with it that affects the rest of us.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2014\/03\/Zombie-Apocalypse-Poster.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-9331 img-fluid \" alt=\"The Zombie Apocalypse Course Poster\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2014\/03\/Zombie-Apocalypse-Poster-195x300.jpg\" width=\"195\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2014\/03\/Zombie-Apocalypse-Poster-195x300.jpg 195w, https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2014\/03\/Zombie-Apocalypse-Poster.jpg 576w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 195px) 100vw, 195px\" \/><\/a>Zombies is being used as a metaphor for all that is not sustainable; but why? \u00a0Well most of us know that Zombies are mindless eating machines, taking whatever is put in front of them and never caring what the consequences are, and certainly never caring about where their next meal is coming from or what it took to get it.<strong style=\"font-size: medium\"><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This metaphor sets up the course to touch upon disaster and survival scenarios that a Zombie Apocalypse could take but it won&#8217;t stop there. \u00a0The basic needs of every human for food, shelter, water and resources is the same we encounter today without an apocalypse; so teaching self-sustainability and the ethics that enable us to have our needs met in today&#8217;s society are the lessons you can expect in case of a Zombie takeover.<\/p>\n<p>INTER 135 is only being offered during spring quarters and is in succession of Bite Me 1 and Bite Me 2 as part of the IDS (<a title=\"Bellevue College Interdisciplinary Studies\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/ids\/\" target=\"_blank\">Interdisciplinary Studies<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Another new\u00a0class at Bellevue College that is teaching sustainability in an interesting way is called <a title=\"Bellevue College The Science of Sustainable Living\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/classes\/All\/ENVS\/105\" target=\"_blank\">The Science of Sustainable Living<\/a>.\u00a0 The course instructor,\u00a0S. Roshni Tewari, taught what has been happening <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2014\/03\/Composting-Week-image.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-9376 img-fluid \" alt=\"composting at lunchroom \" src=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2014\/03\/Composting-Week-image-295x300.jpg\" width=\"207\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2014\/03\/Composting-Week-image-295x300.jpg 295w, https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2014\/03\/Composting-Week-image-1007x1024.jpg 1007w, https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2014\/03\/Composting-Week-image-768x781.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2014\/03\/Composting-Week-image-1511x1536.jpg 1511w, https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2014\/03\/Composting-Week-image-55x55.jpg 55w, https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2014\/03\/Composting-Week-image-45x45.jpg 45w, https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2014\/03\/Composting-Week-image-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2014\/03\/Composting-Week-image.jpg 2014w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 207px) 100vw, 207px\" \/><\/a>around campus in this individual-responsibility based course.\u00a0\u00a0The course held two different field trips, one to the <a title=\"Hopelink Food\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hope-link.org\/get_help\/food\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hopelink Food Bank<\/a> and the next to the <a title=\"Bullitt Center\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bullittcenter.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bullitt Foundation&#8217;s living building<\/a>. \u00a0Both trips helped demonstrate sustainable living patterns in our individual lives and within our society at large by touching on items like food distribution, equity and impact or food deserts and environmental building innovations.<\/p>\n<p>One of the projects that you might have seen students participate in this quarter was the <a title=\"Sustainability at Bellevue College Composting Week\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/BcSust\/photos\/pb.197366093616345.-2207520000.1395089379.\/714863218533294\/?type=3&amp;theater\" target=\"_blank\">Office of Sustainability&#8217;s Composting Week<\/a>. \u00a0Both Composting Week and other engaging life-cycle projects in the course like &#8220;detox me,&#8221; where students list out all ingredients they expose their body to everyday, educated on sustainability and built a greater understanding of how to make better life choices; choices that sometimes effect more than just one person.<\/p>\n<p>Both of these courses show the diversity of\u00a0subjects within the theme of sustainability that are offered here at Bellevue College. \u00a0While these courses are vastly different in their approach, everybody can appreciate learning how to live in more sustainable ways.<\/p>\n<p>Your first tip might be&#8230; watch out for Zombies!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Zombies are popping up everywhere lately but how can Zombies or detoxing teach us to be sustainable?
